Played 9 holes this morning on a local muni.

Now, I'm all for municipal courses as I think they make golf accessible to everyone. You simply turn up, pay and play without the expense of joining a club.

I played in my golf "uniform" ie shoes, trousers and sweater, as did my playing partner. I couldn't help notice that the other people I saw were dressed in jeans and trainers. Add to that hacking and slicing, the wayward shots (a ball landed quite close to us)No shouts of "fore", general shouting and swearing.

Am I being a golf snob? Tell me to go and play at my club if I want the hoyty toyty of golf. I just felt it didn't look right playing in jeans etc plus the general lack of etiquette.

It was quite a nice short course too (part of a larger complex) and testament to the greenkeeping staffs efforts maintain the course.

A snob Basher, no way mate.

I have had several rants on here about muni/p&p courses and with justification.

Unfortunately these places rely on a steady stream of green fees for their income so as a result some of these places may not give a toss who they let on as long as the coffers are kept healthy.

My advice, if you can justify the subs vs green fee's you would pay in a year, join a private club. It is the best thing I ever did and I am absolutely loving it. There are no pi$$ artists on the course, no yobs or people dressed like yobs, no utterly hopeless hackers who think they are Tom Morris reincarnated and there is no danger of being beaten up by the crowd of hoodies who view a dark corner of the course as "their manor".

Amen Jon, I am not alone!!!

I am actually a member of a club (and very happy with it too)
My tight arsed playing partner just didn't fancy paying for a full 18 on mine preferring to pay less for 9 on a muni 9 holer!

My home course doesnt get that type of person, usually everyone wears golf gear, yes you get the odd one but its never a problem. As for slicing, you tiger woods or something?

Basher - dont think you a snob at all. Played at one in Leeds (no names) and the local yobs were doing donughts on the fairway as you were about to tee off! Tire tracks all over the greens from these idiots! Shouting and swearing on the course to one another-and all drinking cans of special brew! Perfect golfing experience! I personally dont mind the lack of formal attire as much as etiquitte - and to me shouting ans swearing comes down to basic manners!

Basher,you are not a snob!!
What I read in your posting was someone who is ready to move on in their Golfing life. I think you sound like an ideal new member for just about any club, all you want is to see that the fundamentals of good manners, respect for fellow golfers, respect for the game are observed.
I see you come from Gods Own Country, which part of Wales you from?

Do not think that you are a snob at all. Whilst I am willing to make a few allowances for muni courses there need to be certain standards maintained to allow golfers to enjoy their round. I am lucky in that the munis and pay and play courses are well run and attract committed golfers but I am sure that there are many that do not.
I personally feel that at least wearing golf shoes should be compulsary on any course. At least by buying a pair you are showing a small amount of commitment to the sport and maybe a can then be encouraged to learn etiquette etc.

Not a snob by my yard stick (if you'll pardon the pun) but then I get annoyed when people drop little on the course - it's my feckin' course and it's not like there's not at least one bin per hole- pond life.

I spend my whole life in a chav infested city and pay handsomely to have access to a space that I don't have to rub shoulders with them.

Some people just have no clue even when monied - profanities within earshot of the missus, generally acting the goat in a cart, rolling trolleys over the short stuff, marking cards on a green. How do these cretins actually manage to summon up the synaptic hand-eye co-ordination to drive or shovel food into their maws is what I can't work out!

You can't buy manners, you either know how to conduct yourself in a civilized fashion or you don't. I went to a comprehensive school in the east end of London and live on a council estate so class and money is a complete blind.

If I want to spend my leisure time with pondlife i'll invest in a wet suit.

Similarly, if I want to spend my free time with a bunch of knuckle-dragging monkeys i'll head to a zoo armed with a truckfull of Bananas.

If the above makes me a snob then i'm a snob. I'll live with it.

(deep breath) - and relax

on an up note I played the 'A' course at my club for the first time today- got through 18 holes without any rain and got within a fleas' knadger of breaking 100 (no great shakes for you battle scarred vets. I know but a big deal for me)

If I could just stop crowning those 50 yard pitch shots I'd be getting somewhere

I am lucky that my Muni is decent and you don't get these chavs much, I have seen them on the odd occasion but never anything to bother me with. The course is attached to a massive park so they tend to stay in that, I wish more could be said for walkers.

You can have similar problems with a private club, take the chav out and replace with pompous old farts and lardedars who most hack their way round the course with all the gear of the big four, they pay their stupidly high subs and joining fees and treat it as a secret society open to no one earning less than £50k. To me the Chav and the elitist are the same thing and to be avoided if I can not do that then I tolerate them because of my love of the game.

All courses have problems from Muni's to Private ones, just look how CC07's club have treated him, private clubs are not the be all and end all of golf.

I have to say that the muni i have just got a season ticket for is pretty good. Generally not many yobs hacking around. Also quite a nice friendly environment and people always look respectable. There is another muni closer to town that all the hackers/hoodies go to.

If i had your experience i would be tempted just to walk off
