Off on holiday at the end of July and staying near Chard on the Somerset/Devon/Dorset border.

Will be taking half a set with me and intend to play just a couple of rounds whilst I'm away, but don't know the courses in the area at all.

Don't intend to travel more than 15-20 miles to get a game and was wondering what were the decent courses in the area....

Cricket St. Thomas
Yeovil
Otter Valley
Taunton & Pickeridge
Long Sutton
Bridport & W.Dorset
Lyme Regis
Oak Mead
Honiton
Oake Manor
Vivary Pk
Taunton Vale
Wheathill

all seem to be within a relatively short drive of where I'm staying.....any of them significantly better (or worse!!!) than the others?

I play at Yeovil and can recommend it. we recently held the Dorset County Champs if that is any guideline.

The courses I have played or know about.

I have never played Cricket despite living here for 30 years. It has improved a lot I have heard.

Taunton & Pickeridge is good but a bit of a slog on the feet.

Long Sutton is good and good value

I would not bother with Bridport if you have limited time. Good for a one time experience but Nearby Lyme Regis is much better

Lyme Regis is excellent

Oake Manor is excellent

Taunton Vale is now closed

Wheathill Greens can be a bit iffy and a couple of odd holes but good value

Vivary Park is a short muni course. Better courses around if you have limited time

Played at Cricket St Thomas a couple of weeks, was in good nick

Member I was playing said the owner had invested a lot of money having the clubhouse rebuilt (nice job too) Next step was investing in the course.

Not a bad course, quite reasonable price, a bit up and down and times, have played a lot worse. Nice carvery

Thanks for the responses guys....going to focus on...

Cricket St. Thomas (closest to where I'm staying)
Yeovil
Taunton & Pickeridge
Long Sutton
Lyme Regis
Oake Manor

will have a browse of various club websites and see what appeals.

Personally I would make the trek down to play East Devon which is a lovely course.

looks nice....but I'm on a family holiday and any golf will be an evening round after spending a day by the beach (or similar)....so where I play and how long it takes me to get there (especially considering seasonal holiday traffic of folks leaving the seaside) will have a direct effect on when I have to drag the family away from whatever we are doing.

It may just be that E.D. stretches the logistics just a bit too far.

Nick, if you fancy a game at ED I can do a twighlight with you at around £15. Bring the family along, drop them off at the beach (5 minutes away) and we can get around in 3 - 3 1/2 hours.
