I am fairly new to golf having only taken up the game last September. I have done ok since my first game scoring 113 and have started hitting the low to mid 80's fairly consistently for the last couple of months. So far I haven't had any lessons & I am at the stage where I think I need some lessons to help me progress further.

Probably a tricky question to answer but at my current playing level what sort of things do I need to be concentrating on? I feel as though my grip and swing are reasonable although I would like my consistency to improve because although I can hit a ball well most of the time if I hit a bad shot it's really bad. Think my putting is ok, usually 30-34 putts a round. I am only hitting 5-8 FIR & 3-6 GIR per round.

How many lessons should I have to start with & if I have a playing lesson apart from general course management how else might this help me?

Thanks in advance for your help :)

I would say get a big package of lessons, video lessons etc.

Just remember to keep the tech stuf to the practice area.

I am doing similar to you, improved to mid 80s from over 100 within a year. I struggle sometimes when my swing gets off plane and the only cure is a few lessons then suddenly I am flirting with a round in the 70s again for a while.

I have not had a lesson since Feb and its showing as now I am back up to high 80s low 90s :(.

Thankfully I am usually saved by my good short game and good putting.

Keep up playing well and invest in a good pro and regular lessons and you will be single figures in no time!

I am about to get a 10 30 min lesson package with two additional 1hour video lessons and two 5 hole playing lessons. Costs 350 but it will be worth it and will help me improve no end!

Playing lessons are great for learning how to actually play the game, as opposed to just how to swing the club or how to chip the ball or how to putt etc etc.

Obviously learning to swing on the range is very important to improving but on course lessons help you adapt what youve learnt and take it to the golf course.

On the range you only play from the mats which are perfectly flat with a perfect lie, on the course you learn how to play from rough, how to hit under trees, how to adapt to different lies (sidehill lies, uphill, downhill etc etc) With my teacher we pretty much alternate weekly between on course and on range lessons. Both are great for different reasons.

From your stats there is nothing that is shouting out to be looked at, though it is always tough to tell as golf stats can often be misleading due to the fact that they all affect each other. All seem fairly inline with what they would be for your handicap though.

Just trying to work out what aspect of your game you should possibly focus on.... Approximately how far do you hit your driver and 7 iron and what do their ball flights look like, (high, low, fade, draw? Also if you were to guess, how many 3 putts do you reckon you have per round?

Thanks for the advice. I think this is a good idea for me to sort out a decent package that covers quit a lot of different aspects of the game.

I would say my ball flights are reasonably high (except when I thin my wedge shots )

I only hit my driver about 230 yards although perhaps not ever so consistent with it. The 7 iron goes about 135-140 yards. I tend to have a slight draw using my Driver & 3 Wood.

The irons tend to be fairly straight. I just have to remember to line them up to the target properly!

I probably on average 3 putt twice per round. I think this is because I end up near the edge of the green more than I should perhaps due to short game inaccuracy.

If you have a smart phone download something like my caddie proabd use the stat manager. I always show my last set of stats to my pro so he knows what needs to be worked on.

Our pro does a good deal, 4 x 1 hour video lessons, 1 9 hole playing lesson, £25 worth of range balls, your swinngs from the lessons on a usb and a stat manger software to use on the pc for £125. We either break lessons down to 15mins general swing,15 woods 15 irons 15 short game or 30 mins general and the same in one problem area
