Golf GPS units

Without wishing to appear rude or condescending, this has been discussed many times. If you use the search option you'll find lots of "for & against" arguments and "which ones best" discussions.

ps I'm in the Skycaddie camp myself ! ;)

Hi,
ive just got myself a sonocaddie autoplay. ive only used it once and it worked a treat. All courses already loaded and no annual fee

Hi Reggie, if you have a mobile phone with a gps receiver in it then don't go spending anything until you try the software available at freecaddie.com. It turns your mobile in to a gps rangefinder for nothing, it will give you distances to the front, middle & back of the green & won't cost you a bean, there are loads of courses to chose from & if you can't see yours then it can be created & uploaded. If you do end up liking it you can upgrade to the pro version where you can record your stats & scores & map out hazards. ;)

Can all you guys who have gone down the phone route for gps tell me if the yardages take a long time to settle or not. I've heard -on here and from others - that it can take an age to get a reading. Is this the case?

Works ok for me imurg, maybe the phone has something to do with it, but for me it settles pretty quick. Why don't you try it, it won't cost you anything & if you don't find it acceptable then look at something else. You've nothing to lose.

Just out of interest, AG sent a flyer through the post (for a member's weekend) offering a sonocaddie model for £149, was £199.
As I've never even seen a/the model in there for £199, I'm a little sceptical.
Anyone else had this through the post?

Not had the flyer through (maybe tomorrow) but if memory serves the Sonocaddie was a little bit big and doesn't fit into a pocket in the same way as SC. That said I think the functionality was better and there was no annual hit

just that the spec for the sonocaddie specifies Windows & IE6 or better.

I've had a couple of 'moments, with SG when I had to open IE just to get over a glitch.

Instant for me (HTC Ty Tn II & Intelligolf)

i have just bought a bushnell neo from AG for £95, tried it yesterday and its great, its really small and fits in your pocket without noticing it, it works really well, there is a 35 dollar membership fee for 1 year, but that includes 100 credits (1 credit = 1 course) and you can keep the courses you download after the years membership is over, so you dont really need to pay again.
it is very basic, no colour screen etc, but it does the job, tells you distances to front centre back of greens and up to 4 hazards on each hole, and you can add more if all 4 havent been used, it holds up to 10 courses.

and for £95 quite a bargain!!!

Cool...£95

I discovered the AG model was actually a sureshot and you can get it for £149 any day of the week, so not so good really.
Also, and this is the bad news, one of the courses I really need is not on the system yet, so I'm out.

The hunt continues....

there are virtually all courses available on the bushnell, if its not there you can send a request and they email you back and ask you to provide a scan/email of the front and back of the scorecard and they try to get it mapped as soon as they can.

I've got CaddyAid on my Blackberry and to be honest I'm less than impressed. Whilst I can live with the fact the yardage takes a few seconds to settle, it does nothing to help the confidence when I am standing in the middle of a green only to be told I'm ten yards away from it!!
