Golf courses near Rye, Sussex ?

Am spending Easter weekend with mrs sev112 and the litt'lun down on a caravan site near Rye
No chance obviously of getting on Rye - anyone any recommendations for a course in the reasonable proximity who would let me on early one morning over easter weekend, or late afternoon ?

Littlestone would be my choice and although I havn't played Rye my understanding is that Littlestone (which I have played) is a much better track

I sincerely hope you are wrong as I'm playing Rye next month. I've only ever heard great things about Rye whereas any comments I've ever heard about Littlestone have been along the lines of OK or not bad.

It is possible to get a game at Rye, I went through my club secretary and he wrote to them and they said yes to four of us playing next month

Dunno who has made the comments, but I'd certainly rate Littlestone much better than either "OK" or "Not bad". It's an Open qualifying venue and a great place for a round of golf. Personally, I'd rather play Littlestone than Princes.
I've never played Rye, driven by it a few times. I don't feel I've missed out on anything to be honest, but everytime I drive by Littlestone I wish I were out there playing.

Smiffy's dead right. I live not too far from Rye and its pretty difficult to get a game there and frankly I couldn't be arsed to make the effort to play a course who dont really want you unless you've been to Oxbridge.

The last few holes at Littlestone are some of the best links golf anywhere and if I fancy a links game, that is where I would go being 20 mins drive for me.

Being an open qualifying course is no indication of quality, it just means the club is prepared to put up with 5 years of interference from the R&A. I've played many open qualifying courses, they range from pretty good to pretty mediocre. You tend to find that the best courses don't really want the hassle, it is the lesser courses that are prepared to host it so they can claim some kudos from doing so and thus hike up their green fees.

My club has been approached several times by the R&A and we have said no every time.

Rye is much better than Littlestone - far more variety in the holes, although one or two may be a little quirky for some tastes. That said, Littlestone has a good finish with a very tough par 4, a long difficult par 3 and then a par 5 which should give you half a chance if you can get your drive away.

* Be on their very best behaviour
* Be happy to play in twos
* Have gone to a certain type of school
* Possess a Labrador or Golder Retriever
* Not be averse to sporting a pair of plus fours and the odd bit of Tweed

In other words, it can be quite tricky, though not impossible, to get a game there!

It's not quite that bad guys, my borstal headmaster wrote to the secretary at Rye and they have agreed to let me on. I did have to promise not to nick anything out the locker room though.

But it is STRICTLY 2balls or foursomes only. Really looking forward to my day out there
