It would be interesting to see what an independent source would come up with as to the effect of advertising. all you see comes from those with a vested interest.

How many buy purely as a result of advertising? I'm not counting shelf displays in this.

I bought my first pair of Footjoys because they were
a) leather
b) on sale
c) fitted and comfortable, and
d) looked Ok

My next pair of shoes were Adidas - same criteria, though failed c subsequently - now binned and no more Adidas for me.

Hi Guys, and specifically madandra,

With regards to the issues people are having with the pop-up adverts on the site, firstly, apologies for the delay in coming back with a reply but a) Mike is away (and he normally likes to address these issues) and b) we are extremely busy producing the magazine.

In terms of the artwork and creative which is causing such problems, this is FootJoy's branding and as such is not something Golf Monthly or IPC Media would have any say on (I'm sure you all appreciate and understand that).

In terms of the ads being there, such revenue streams are critical to the maintenance and support of the GM website and forum. I believe it says a lot about the popularity of this forum and its reputation and well-constructed comment from knowledgeable golfers alike, that FootJoy, and other leading brands, are wanting to advertise in this section of site. They have identified the forum for such positioning and who are we to turn down requests from one of our most trusted and well-respected clients.

I, like the next man, get wound up by pop-up ads that block my vision and prevent the smooth navigation of a site - especially on news-saturated sites where I want to read copy (Sky Sports a case in point). But in this case I'm struggling to see where the problem lies guys. These are static banner ads with a bit of 'flash' design; they are not blocking your vision. To be honest with you I don't like the colour 'green' but I can live with it.

It goes without saying that revenue from display ads in the mag and such creative online helps us to produce both forms of product. These ads may be here next week, they may not. Personally we don't have anything to do with that, our sales team take care of business matters, leaving us, and you, to talk about the important stuff - like golf.

If the ads make you dizzy (as some have suggested) then maybe it's time to have a break from the screen. However, just make sure you come back and carry on posting, as we could have all the ads in the world, but if you lot don't contribute to YOUR forum, then those ads would be worthless.

Have a great weekend everyone...

Understand the need for adverts and Income streams etc and have no problems with standard adverts

My problem is with the bits of the ads that move in and out of your peripheral vision as you are reading a post.

They are very distracting and very annoying
Ok it makes the viewer aware of the advert, but by now the viewer is aware to the point of punching the screen.

Can you have a chat with the guys who set up these ads and in future try to limit the amount of movement.

Cheers

Fragger
