Well after much nudging and cajoling I have finally got my golf club on Twitter. Updates on course conditions, details of special offers in the pro shop, announcement of competition winners, information of upcoming events, info on course improvements all to look forward to.

@WaldringfieldGC

All much better than newsletters if you ask me. Forget this monthly/bi-monthly nonsense. Immediate, instant, up to date news. Very happy bunny.

Next step lose the old website and introduce a blog. Interaction between members and committee, a dynamic vibrant welcome for new visitors and a guaranteed way to engage with younger members.

Anyone else's club embraced technology? Would be great to highlight some good practice examples to the committee.

I am very keen on this, I will put it in the suggestion box on Saturday (yes we are that out of date that we have a suggestion box in the bar).

I have just taken over updating our website - Most of the members don't even use that let alone twitter.
I doubt most of them would know what it was

and im pretty sure in thinking

The really good thing is you can put the twitter feed on the clubs website with widgets (u could have a twitter account for each page on the site, pro-shop ,events, course conditions ) (alot easier to update than having to edit website all the time)

http://twitter.com/about/resources/widgets

>my website >profile widget
twitwidget.jpg

its customizable...colours ,number of tweets displayed

and then everyone can see update information on all the things youve already suggested....course conditions, events ,proshop offers etc
....without having to be on twitter or that tech savvy

Ah ....

Modern technology fails again.
It'll be interesting to see how many people use it Tiger.
It wouldn't happen at my place, we only got electricity last month.....

They only set up the account last night so thinking it will take a little while to get going.

The thing with websites is that they rely on you to visit them. If you have a twitter account for other things the messages will get through. You can also link back to your website if you want to boost traffic or highlight specific things. Smart phones are on the up and up so more and more people will have t'interweb in their pocket. Most importantly though it is quicker to send a tweet than update a website.

Hopefully enough people will be using it by the start of the season to allow it to fulfil it's potential. The great thing about social media is that it makes things more social. New members looking for a game could ask for a retweet, existing swindles could look for new members and most importantly it could help interaction with a younger membership.

Only time will tell...

Oh and Homer on the blogging front it's quantity AND quality *[cue blog wars]* :D ;)

That is certainly my ambition but first we'll need to move away from our current site and onto a blog. This would also make it much easier for the committee to regularly make updates without costly technical support. Hoping the twitter gets going and then I'll speak to the new CC about the website. They might already have a plan in place.

Either way I'm there to help if they like my ideas. :D

To be fair I think there's a time and a place for both twitter and facebook...it would be great if clubs were on both and could co-exist peacefully...

My ideal would be if clubs used twitter for more real-time weather updates, course conditions etc so you could see before setting out what the course was like, drainage, closures etc.

Similarly, I see no reason why you shouldn't be able to book your tee-times via twitter too; it wouldn't take much effort for someone to check it every hour or so.

As much chance of Monty doing the Grand Slam this season as the club I'm at embracing this.

I like it though. Between Twitter, Facebook and Blogspot as well as the club's own sites there are plenty resources out there to get information circulated quickly.
