Just been reading the VAR thread and watched the old footage of George's dribbling skills. Thanks to Kamelion for posting

It just reinforces my opinion that Best was the greatest footballer to ever kick a ball. And the complete control of the ball he had on those quagmire of pithces of yesteryear! People have said before that the game used to be slow - but did you see how quick he ran with the ball?

How much is Sanchez reported to be getting per week, £450.000! George Best would be worth double that today, and nobody would be able to get near him.

Getting back to those muddy pitches - some of todays footballers would probably refuse to play on them cos' their boots might get clogged up.

George Best was a "Real Footballer".

RIP George.

Saw him at Craven Cottage in very much the twilight of his career but you could see even then he was so talented. A shame that his lifestyle got in the way of his football and he never really reached his full potential. What we were fortunate enough to get in those short season made him the best player in the world at the time. What could he gone on to achieve?

Don't disagree with much of that, he was class from what I've seen, but C.Ronaldo and Messi are definitely the best footballers of all time. Their records are insanely better than anyone else in history.

Nearly impossible to compare players from different generations but imo if Best was playing nowadays Ronaldo and Messi would be playing second fiddle to him, just think of Ronaldo playing the same time as Best he wouldn't last 5 minutes.

Pele described George Best as the greatest player he ever saw. Some compliment that.

Watched that too Chris, what a player hard to compare players from different generations but imo only Messi could compare to him but Best was better,he had everything hard tackler good header of the ball great with both feet the complete player.

Remember that famous clip of Chopper Harris trying to take the legs from him.Cant remember if that one was in the compalation.

Or maybe, Ronaldo as the athlete he is (or lots currently are) would waltz passed blokes that would be on a bender the evening before.

not discrediting best, footage I’ve seen makes him look quality, but I sometimes feel nostalgia clouds people’s minds.

You just can’t compare, but certainly the best of their respective generations.

Anyone of a older generation on here would agree it's not nostalgia clouding their minds Best really was that good, even Pele said he was the best.

Although some one might say Greaves was better.;)

Best was well before my time. How long was he actually a proper player? I don't mean his time in America, his later clubs etc. I mean his peak. My impression is it was only a short period but i don't know.

One of the things you have to admire about Pele, Maradona, Messi, Ronaldo etc is the period of time they have been at the top. Minimum 10 years for each of them being absolutely top of their game. That has to be admired.

I’m not arguing that he was the best of that era.

My nostalgia remark was in regards to the quality he faced. Even in my 30 years of watching saints. I can see our dire players of Now, would still run rings aro7nd our dire players 20 years ago.

True and Best (and Marsh) made lower league players of the time look like park playing mugs (much to their annoyance) but without breaking sweat you could still see what a mecurial talent he was. I guess you could argue Best played against the best of his generation both at home and in Europe

He was Utd 63-74, in that time he won the League twice, European Cup, Player of the year, European Footballer of the Year, Ballon D’Or Winner. In that time he’d of been judged against the World’s best, Pele, Beckenbauer, Charlton etc.
He’d of never won international honours playing for NI.

Pele won three World Cups, the first one when he was 17. He was the best player in the world for probably 12 years, and his scoring record was better than Messi and Ronaldo at club and International level. Best player I have ever seen.

Seems some on here don't realise how long Best played at the top level. I was an avid supporter of M Utd in his day so watched all his games - nostalgia has nothing to do with it, just remembering how utterly talented he was. He would flourish in todays game, especially on the super playing surfaces available.

Best was pretty much the same sort of player that Messi is imo. Utterly awesome to watch their skill on the ball, and imo hugely better than Renaldo who is a great goal scorer but, for me, Best and Messi would knock Renaldo into a cocked hat skills wise

Absolutely, like I said before it’s wrong imo to try and judge players from different era’s against each other, we can’t even agree on Ronaldo v Messi
I watched the Kenny Dalglish film today and George Best is in the film stating Dalglish was one of the best he ever saw.
Regardless of what he achieved or could’ve achieved he was undoubtebly one of the greatest ever to grace the game.
