has anyone served on one?

Thinking of throwing my cap into the ring.
get little or no communication from current shower.

How often do they meet?
What's generally covered at the meetings?

Yes, I'm on our's, but thinking of standing down in a few weeks time let someone else take the hassel.
Beleive me, if someone has a bad round, get out the way because it will be ur fault.
Everything is talked about at those meetings and I mean everything. Sub meetings should cover most things with bigger stuff only brought to the main meetings.
I enjoy being on the council and working for the club, but it's hardly worth the sh123 you get from some of the members.

I've served on our match and handicap committee a couple of times and we were responsible for running all the competitions throughout the year. For a saturday competition we would meet on the Thursday night before and do the draw, write out the scorecards make sure someone bought the prizes and arranged a band if there was entertainment at the prize giving. We also ran raffles.

During the summer months we were meeting once a week. As well as doing the admin for the golf we would discuss anything that had been brought up by any of the members.

Just been voted on to ours, got our first committee meeting tomorrow night. SO i can let you know more tomorrow

I have already noticed though how people keep saying - you want to sort that out and that needs to be changed

I sat on ours for 4 years and go involved with loads of stuff. I mainly sat on the "golf" sub committe which, like the other committees, meant monthly meetings and then we also sat on the general committee where all the sub committees reported monthly

The up side is that you learn a lot more about the club and what is going on and you can help shape its future.

The downside is that people blame the committee for everything, it takes a lot of your time and very often, because of intransigence, you dont often get to change the status quo. Also, some of the more ejit members who have a gripe with the decisions that the committee make that they dont like, can be pretty rude to you, whether or not you voted for or against whatever it is that upset them

As was said earlier it does take something of a thick skin to serve but also can be rewarding

Not on the committee but run the clubs website and manage the mailbox which takes a fair few hours a week.

Looking at joining our communications sub-committee as the way we pass on information is shocking and antiquated. Have already done some work publicising our first husband and wife captains in our 123 history which got some good publicity and producing a document to present on what I think (based on research and comments from here and elsewhere) we can do to communicate quicker and more effectively to a diverse membership ranging from some of the oldies without IT access to the Tweeters and social network embracing generation and those inbetween

To anyone who is prepared to give up their time they have my admiration. I may not agree with all the decisions of our comittee but I applaud them for making the commitment to the club and more importantly the members.

It is all too easy for members and I include myself in that to judge - if you do stand then I take my hat off to you.

Have been on our committee for around 6 years. During that time I've been on handicap throughout (handicap chair for 2 years), membership, vice captain last year and (6 days ago) became our club captain. In tht time I've seen plenty of committee members come and go (good and bad). I would say that if you are doing it for the right reasons (main qualities would be that you have some general skills to offer, CARE about the club and can put some proper time in) then go for it.

Yes, you get lots of crap but you get plenty of rewards too. When things go well then it's a great feeling of satisfaction and so long at the cock-ups (which there will always be) are few and far between then it's great.

Word of warning though - It can be very political and you can't go in thinking you can change everything overnight. You will need support for any ideas you have and probably need to "chip away" at the establishment to get any real change. Never lose sight of the fact that you are elected.... talk to members and more importantly, listen to them.

There has been a lots of good advice given to you.
The bit I would like to add is that there is a lot of history behind every commitee and that is where the a lot of the myths about clubs and commitees start.
So the first thing you need to do is sort out in your own mind is the fact from the fiction.
Also if you take on say the Greens chairmans job make sure you are given clarity as to just what your responsibilites are.
Treat everyone the same accrding to membership status. our commitee have resently given a concesstion to the five day members and it is coursing a real problem.my view is people should get what they pay for.

Ours gave 5 day members weekend priveleges a couple of years ago. couldn't enter comps but still..... caused loads of sh!t.

I'm not considering it to get owt back other than the satisfaction that I have made a difference. Current commitee members generally play together and don't always get the views of the majority other than the odd snipe.

i've played with around 40 different members and most of their issues are the same, but we do not get any valuable communication
