I've made a conscious decision today to try and fulfill a long held ambition. When I were a lad the first job I ever wanted was to be a journalist, in fact to be specific I was going to be a football journalist with the Daily Telegraph (chosen primarily because they were the first to do Fantasy Football which was utter genius). I took History and English at A level but then having been fortunate to talk with Lee Clayton (think he's at the Mail now) I wasn't sure I had the right mentality for football journalism and started to think about a career in Law. Everyone told me to study something compatible for my degree and then do a conversion course, so I read History...

...whilst at Uni I got into acting a little more seriously than I had done at school. I'd had drama lessons at a young age and been in a few school plays. I played the lead role in two student productions in the Nuffield Theatre Southampton, and performed at the Edinburgh festival. I seriously considered going to drama school and trying to become a professional actor but I bottled it...

...fast forward ten years and I'm doing a job I love and am passionate about BUT I still have a soft spot for writing and acting. I've started a number of scripts and books over the years but never finished any of them. Then last week someone told me about the BBC Writers Room (http://www.bbc.co.uk/writersroom/) and I've decided that I'm going to get back into writing and hopefully produce something of worth.

So my question to you all is do have any ambitions that remained unfulfilled and do you think there is any chance of you 'having at go' at achieving them?

I have one golfing ambition that unfortunately will never be fulfilled. When a lad I wanted to meet Ben Hogan. I had and still have Five Lessons - The Modern Fundamentals of Golf book, and learnt to play from it. But as no internet or anything like that I had no idea what he really looked like, indeed whether or not he was still alive or how I could meet him. The only way I could think of was writing to Jim'll Fix It - but I thought that nobody would be interested in a wee Scottish laddie with Elvis Costello specs meeting with Ben Hogan (who?) - and so - to my eternal regret - I never did - and meet him in this life I never will :(

I'm another who would love to get into writing. My dear old dad part wrote the pilot for an 80's ITV comedy called "Second Thoughts" with Linda Bellingham, James Bolam and I think a young Julia Sawalha. He then sold his rights to it when it went into production. That lit my flame but I wasn't academic at school and even though I got a grade A O level a year early and passed my AO (advanced O level) in English Lit, I wanted out and never contemplated further education. That effectively shut all the doors for me.

I've been fortunate to have had a few articles published since (several in GM over the years) so it has kind of scratched the itch to a degree. Yes I blog and yes I'm proud of what I produce and try and invest time into it to make it as good a read as I can. I don't think I have what it takes unlike the OP but will continue to submit articles to relevant markets when the muse takes me, dabble with the blog and maybe get around to putting the book idea I've had for years onto a screen if only for my own consumption

Career wise, I always wanted to teach and it may be something I look at later in life.

As for other things, simple I know but I have always wanted to learn to ride a motorbike just so as I can ride a Harley Davidson just once. I am not into the speed or thrills I just have always loved the look and sound of the things. My mother has always been very anti motorbikes so I have never done anything about it but I am 40 in 3 months so starting lessons may be my 40th present to myself.

I've always wanted a classic VW Beetle. Once we've got the wedding out of the way (2014) I'm gonna start looking for a 70's GT with high back seats etc. White. Or red.

Myself and a friend did up a 1974 "jeans" beetle in the early 90's. Bright yellow with blue denim seatcovers. It was a fantastic car despite the fact that it was totally impractical for british winters. Did the run to the sun and volksfest with it, then sold it for a good profit... Happy days...

So my question to you all is do have any ambitions that remained unfulfilled

When I was a kid I was enthralled by the Apollo space program and worked out that given the time scale suggested at the time I could be the first man on Mars.

I then got into golf and of course wanted to become a pro and win the Open.

and do you think there is any chance of you 'having at go' at achieving them?

Errr....No.

:(:D

I'd love to play a musical instrument well. Love the saxaphone and did try a number of years back but I was rubbish and gave up. Still hanker after perhaps piano or guitar but would probably be as bad!

My career should have been in either in medicine, astronomy or sport. Thats what I think I have a natural interest for, but none of those is what I'm doing! Ho-hum :)

I had fulfilled many ambitions by my 55th birthday....lucky sod!
I also tried a bit of creative writing, which must sound funny to most of you as I left skool at 15 with zilch qualifications.
I quite liked the things wot I rote and I started to write 'Stories of my Life'. Got up to 15 years old then stopped. I'll start again someday.
My wife, mother and brother are the only ones to have read it and were amazed by my memory of my childhood.

'fraid I don't seem to have any earth shattering ambitions...

We're looking to move house.
I'd like to retire early but I enjoy my job too.

I've two ambitions from way back which although still ping on the radar occasionally they don't exactly wow me anymore. To see the great wall of China & a fly drive across USA.

At school my best subject was physics, it all seemed so easy.

Final year 6th form we got a new Physics teacher, he asked for 2 people to leave as the class was too big. for some reason I didnt like him so decided to leave and do I.T instead.

Always regret that, even though I got my degree in IT and have a good job now.

I have a few mini projects in the garage that I work on in the winter, but spending less and less time on them now.

Sometimes ambition may not be just one thing.

One of my biggest was playing at Anfield the other year, which was a lifetime's ambition, but playing at St. Andrews was also great experience.

I've seen my team at the San siro,Barca, Real and Athletice madrid, benfica, Moscow, Istanbul, Dortmund and on and on, I've played Royal Liverpool, Lytham, Carnoustie, Turnberry. I stood on the trade towers 7 months before they come down. Ive'benn to half the European capitals. I've seen the sistine chapel, the Vatican, the Doje's palace, the Louvre, Boston red sox, Yankee stadium, Chicago cubs, the redskins all play or been to their ground.

I still want to go to Bayern Munich's ground, play Birkdale, TPC Sawgrass, the rest of the open courses, see an Ashes test in Australia, a lions tour of South africa, a safari, the pyramids, visit Stockholm and go to Gillingham's ground (still want to do the 92 English league grounds), see Motherwell's ground and on and on...........

Some people may chase one dream, and good luck to them, I still have dreams to fulfill and some may change, or I haven't even dreamt them yet, but try for them fella, you don't know where they'll take you.

Not bad.....

Waking up tomorrow is as much ambition as I have. I don't have any goals, my life has been up and down and sometimes very rewarding whilst other times are somewhat lower. I can't believe some of the things I've done but there's always someone who's done more. My tombstone will read "I had a good time - I think" :D

Wouldn't mind writing a book.... but my missus would KILL ME!

never too late Hobbit, a bloke at work is doing route 66 right now, he is 58 y/o. He rented a soft top for it aswell (he said if your going to do it then do it properly).

I have always felt I underachieved. My mum says I am a go with the tide sort of person and not a swimmer, meaning I just saunter through life without really going for anything. I managed to play football to semi pro level but didnt see it through due to women/booze/fags. I left scgool at 16 early with zero quals so went back to college/uni and got a hnd in business and accounting & a degree in business (to prove to myself I did have some intelligence).

My ambition now is when the kids are all over 18 is to travel more, I have seen a lot of the world when in the forces but never on holidays. Having just been through a hellish month or so (financially and 2 close family members passing away) I am also going to try and chill out more and have a better relationship with my kids... lifes too short
