What's the best virus protection and security for our computers?

Since bringing my stuff home from the business my Nod32 has expired which I think was pretty good but now I don't think I have any protection other than the normal Windows Firewall as I get a daily Windows security alert when switching on.

What and where can I download something free that won't keep bugging me to upgrade and give bogus threats to spend more money etc?

Thank you in advance ;)

Used 'Avast' for a number of years and it's OK but while I'm not a huge Microsoft fan I have to say that their 'Microsoft Security Essentials' is currently on my three computers and I can't fault it

Ive always used AVG in the past but am now using Microsoft Security Essentials on the recommendation of a friend who is an IT professional, both seem fine to me

AVAST is one of the best.

Be careful of the MS essentials one as its very resource hungry and can slow down older less powerful pc's.........apparently

For free, I'd go with Avast! I have it on my laptop and no issues. AVG and MSE I found to be quite resource heavy and I got fed up of Avira's constant nagging to upgrade.

I use Bitdefender Total Security on my main desktop PC for years and its been great! I have a couple of free 1yr licenses for Bitdefender Internet Security 2013 going spare.. they need to be activated by the end of February though, if anyone wants one.

Thank you, just download Avast.

Only did the free Virus, Spyware side but is it worth spending the £19.99 for the whole 9 yards?

I use Avast free antivirus with windows firewall. Also I have malwarebytes free stuff to do checks every week too. MSE is ok but not the best.

Just downloaded the free malwarebytes also, did a quick scan and 3 threats of Trojan Horses  Deleted and hopefully I'm clean now.

Had AVG and nothing but problems, was going to get Avast and an IT techy in work recommended I save my money and get 'Microsoft Security Essentials.

That's about 9 months ago and not had any issues which I had lots if before.

Another vote here for Microsoft SE. I've used it for 2-3 years without any problems at all. Great bit of kit that just runs quietly in the background.

MSE on 2 pc's and 3 laptops and countless friends I have built/upgraded... no issues with hogging resources. Back in my IT days we all used AVG but that was 6 years ago so a lot has changed :p
