Bit of a career for FF. Not a cricket fan but have followed him on twitter etc
He has now been given a boxing licence and is getting trained by Barry McGuigan, I know they hit it off when FF done a recent docu on depression in sport.
First bout at the end of November

Hope he does well, like him as a bloke and a sportsman

Think he could do quite well, lost 40lbs and fitter now than he's ever been. Taking it seriously as well rather than just having a go....

so he will be coming in around the 15 stone range and he is 6 ft 3ish never had any boxing training ( a few weeks hitting a bag doesn't count )and now he wishes to be called a pro heavyweight boxer--------- he will be destroyed by any of the top 100 fighters in this country and probably by the top amateurs,he is making boxing a laughing stock.

yet they still allow people like audley harrison to fight (although after his destruction at the weekend i think his lets put it at retired)

give the lad a chance hopefully knowin him he will give it his all! and ofcourse they wouldnt/shouldnt put him in against anyone near the top 50-100 yet but looking at some of these lesser known boxers doesnt look like they have trained a day, same should be said to him that is said here, dont let anybody tell you you cant do it or are to old hope he proves people wrong and does a half decent job i know i will be cheering him on!

i used to be involved in the coaching of boxer for many years and the ones you see on tv have been boxing from a very early age, they learned their trade and skills in the amatuer ranks before turning pro then learned the pro game, even the overweight journeyman type who fight on an undercard for £100 have years and years of boxing behind them, even another pro who is having his first pro fight normally has years of training in the art of boxing not running about a bit on a cricket field, fitness is not the be all and end all knowing how to take a punch and recover as well as knowing how to throw a punch and reading an opponent only comes with years of experience,as i said he will be destroyed by any top amature heavyweight and do you think he could beat audley harrison!!!!!

Nice to see you are the champion of everything once again. Have you actually read or seen any of the reports on him doing the boxing? And is it so hard to believe that a sports person who is a pro in other fields cannot succeed in boxing. Flintoff would not be the first professional sportsman to undertake a boxing career with no experience. Former Sheffield United footballer Curtis Woodhouse made his boxing debut in 2002 and has won 16 of his 20 contests.

Maybe just see how he goes instead of poo pooing people everytime they do something we mere mortals cant acheive whether it be through lack of skill, commitment or sheer doggidness.

I would love to see him fight, if he does that with the same effort he did with his charity work or cricket he might surprise you and many more.

well done steve!! maybe some people dont like pro sportsman from other areas coming into thiers?? but as you said dont shoot the man down even before had a chance to prove himself? why would barry wanna put his name to him if he didnt think he could make himself look atleast respectable in the ring
and the comment about just running about a bit on a cricket pitch hmmm small mind i think the amount of work they have to go through not just fitness but mental strength batting at a crease for hours on end isnt something that is easy to do! especially in places like india, australia etc..
they also have to have amazing reaction timesthem balls are whizzing past at 90mph plus with fractions of a second to react! ask kieron pollard with what happened to him in 2010 i think it was in the IPL, his face explodedwhen he got hit but these incidents would be more frequent without the practise.

you say being able to read an opponent well they have to find ways of reading bowlers of say spin! watching the way it comes out thier hand at 60mph to pick what the ball will do when pitches.

im not saying for one minute freddie is going to be amazing especially in his 1st fight but give the man a break he wants to try something and his being criticised for it!?!

they also have to a high degree inreaction times them balls can whizz by at 90mph plus and have fractions of a second to react, ask ki

wow grumpy i take it your not a freddie fan then :D

id like to know why some people dont like him? maybe that is a new topic we could start...

i think the last thing he needs to do is make money i think he may have enough of that especially as he spends wuite a bit of time nowadays doing charity work ( well apart from his new boxing career)

Whats going to happen to his reaction times once tiredness kicks in and the experience of the other boxer keeps plying on the pressure?

Are cricketers renowned for their stamina? I don't know!

He's clearly putting the effort in and definitely not treating it lightly so rather than lambast the guy let's at least see how he gets on. His head may explode after one punch or he may have a bit about him. I have no doubt he doesn't see this as a major new career or he'll be competing for belts or titles but as a "pro" fighter let him see what he can do career wise

haha triple i think you will find that they have extremely high levels of stamina and concerntration some people especially in test matches can spend on some occasions about 7 hours batting and when they are spending alot of thier time running in the hot conditions it can certainly zap you, but i guess you dont get the actual intensity on a tv screen

like i said im not promoting him as the next big thing my main comment was to say why cant he do it? doesnt wayne rooney play to a good level of golf
i think kimi raikannon was on SSN a few months ago and talking about he also plays of scratch in golf.

so i say why can a person take to another sport? b4 people have to write him off???

i just believe in giving everyone a chance

There is a difference between someone playing a sport to a great standard to someone playing professionally.

And are you really comparing fitness/training levels between a boxer and a cricketer??

didnt see that i was comparing them in fitness levels, you asked me are they renowned for thier stamina to which i replied YES, they play for 5 days albeit the get rest time if not batting ect but players can spend days in the field and freddie would have spent large parts of that running in and givng effort balls everytine then having to field after so yeah thier stamina is of a high calibre.

im merely saying people can take up other sports as a enjoyment thing and still play that to a high level so who knows what would be if they decided totake it up seriously i cant and neither could you.

homer i agree some people just want put a downer on people that want to try out something.

maybe you should look into multi-sport athletes to show you can be a professional at more than 1 sport..

people that do not believe will not achive anything.

I know there are many multi sport athletes out there. One of my biggest idol's crossed over to another sport.

Another important aspect, would be age. I guarantee Boxing is more strenuous and stressful on the body than Cricket.

Obviously, the England football team believes in that last statement.

Sounds like he's already had one blow to the head too many.

Agree. Sounds like a very bad idea, no matter how fit or bulked up he is.

Professional boxers have almost always grown up with boxing as kids and had amateur careers before going pro. This sounds like a vanity exercise like a scratch handicap footballer trying his hand at professional golf. Except the risk of serious injury in golf is a bit less.
