Revolution.

I watched a few episodes of Jamie Oliver's Food Revolution last night.

Todays young generation are expected to die before their parents.

Why are their children at school at 07.40 having pizza and chocolate milk for breakfast?

Why are 12 year olds becoming diabetic?

How far behind are we in Britain or has he helped our schools avoid going down the same processed food road before reaching the American levels of obesity?

Of course some of it is staged for TV but there's no escaping the fact that we do tend to copy what the Americans do. I just hope the British parents have seen the programme and have taken an interest in what their kids are being fed at their schools.

Scary :( :( :(

Do your kids have breakfast at school?

Mine doesn't but I know some that do. To be fair the Before/After school club that The Boy goes to have a pretty good range of foods on offer.
Another problem with the 24hour Society we've become. PArents either have to get to work at stupid times or maybe even just coming home from work and they don't have the time to do things properly before the kids start school. One of the reasons I became Driving Instructor - so I can tailor my diary to fit the home lifestyle.

my kids are up early and have toast or cereal, and juice for breakfast.
The school meals are good too, as they sometimes stay for dinners, we get a sheet home and can choose what they have, always fruit and veg on offer.

Me however has just had 2 muffins with bacon and mushrooms, with a jug of coffee.... :)

Been watching the series. Not usually a massive J.O. fan, but fair play to him in continuing to fight his cause and trying to make a difference (whether or not it's for the popularity vote is neither here nor there - I personally don't think it is).

What startles me is how unco-operative the School Board in LA comes across. Obviously we only have one side of the story, but I recall when Jamie did the school dinners thing over here, he had complete control of the kitchens he was working in.

What I find amusing is that the american kids and parents although, generally, have a love for fast food, but get right behind Jamie in trying to get it stopped.

When he did it over here, the kids and parents were totally ignorant to the fact. "What's wrong with Turkey Twizzlers? They're meat aint' they? We don't need school dinners changing, especially if it's costing more" etc..

I'm currently sat here enjoying a bowl of Low Carb Company Granola (which is incredible, incase anyone is intriuged) covered in fat free activia yoghurt. :D

Pizza for breakfast, mmmmmmmmm :D

The young un goes to breakfast club sometimes, it's a selection of cereals or toast, which isnt too bad - just the same as she would be getting at home I suppose.

I might contact the school and demand to know why they cant have pizza's :p

Whats wrong with wheat-a-bix with chocolate, toast and nutella and chocolate milk to start your day?

Sets me up nicely for my mars bar at 1000 and a couple of penguin biscuits at 11 before my deep fried pizza supper for lunch washed down with full fat irn bru!

After that its two large bags of walkers cheese and onion crisps, a twix and a cuppa at 1600 before a curry or a large kebab for tea!!!

Heart Attacks in the West coast of Scotland are enjoyable!

Fixed that for ya JonBoy!! :D :D

:D

You are mistaken, sir! It's sweetened with black treacle rather than sugar so it's still sweet, but has less than half the sugar of normal supermarket granola.

It's one of the reasons I gave up work! Shreddies or weetabix for my two with toast after. Glass of water and vitamin tablet. I like jo values on getting people to eat properly, our daughters school is good for food snacks at break must be healthy, they have chooseday (Tuesday) where they can take in what they want. Breakfast club is cereal or toast. My two also have plenty of fruit everyday. Since being off work I have seen more people about town and school etc and I'm shocked at the state of our country kids massively over weight along with parents and other adults. There was one "fat" kid when I was a school now I wouldn't like to think of the percentage!! The about of boys I see in jogging pants instead of school trousers is shocking!

its the availability of junk food that is screwing things up, Take this morning on my way to work. 7:15 and a kid is buying a hotdog in our local news agents. since the refit they now offer Hotdogs(herta rubbish type) Sausage rolls, pasties, steak slices, etc. the manager reckons they have had to double stock in the mornings and at lunch times as the kids clear them out. What good is a hotdog to a 10 year old at 7am.

Mine has either a cereal bar and orange juice/milk or Weetabix with warm milk. Our kids get good healthy food every day, weekends they might get a slice of pizza or chips, never excess in it though.
I am on a healthy kick after last weeks escapades also and want to get back to my good old 36 inch trews.

Half the problem, to my mind, is not just the food but the selling off of playing fields and the lack of competitive sport at school. OK I am not the finest example with my current figure but when I were a lad, you burned off the calories playing sport before, during and after school. We were always doing something not living the sedentery life that some kids live today.

It is not just us with the bad breakfasts though, the French are terrible, most kids' breaksfast has to have some chocolate content.

'Arry Redknapp made a very valid point. He said that when he was a kid, every park was full of kids playing football (or sport in general). Now, he said, you drive past a park and it's empty.

He was referring to the lack of quality young English footballers coming through the ranks but I think it also highlights todays youngster's attitude to physical fitness.

The internet is God to kids of today - XBox Live, PS3, facebook, etc - all of these mean that kids don't have to leave their bedrooms anymore.

When I was a kid, I was in the park from dawn 'til dusk.
