Had serious knee troubles on and off for nearly 5 years which led to me becoming inactive and piling on the pounds.

Have now got my knee right, am back playing golf but initially my fitness and strength were appalling (plus a few stone to shed).

Have started using Kettlebells (basically a shot put with a handle) and wouldn't hesitate to recommend them to anyone, although would recommend learning via a qualified instructor, at least initially.

Far more enjoyable than the gym for me, and get an aerobic and a strength training session in one.

Have been going about 10 weeks now and am starting to see great results, have shed nearly a stone and a half and my fitness levels are already unrecognisable.

Don't just do cardio. A mix of cardio and weight training is best, your muscles are your bodies furnace, the more you train them the more calories you'll burn on a daily basis.

Also don't stick to one type of cardio, mix it up, swim, run, cycle etc. Your body gets used to the same type of cardio after a while so it's not as effective as mixing things up.

Matty im just recently retired from football through injury.......
If you need to get fit quick start cycling or swimming if you can.......
There's no impact on joints an its great cardio......

BUT......You have to eat pretty sensibly too.......
If i were you id start with the bike and do 8 miles a night until you feel your dong it handy and then up the milage......

Cycle round the Isle of Wight on a heavy full-suspension mountain bike. I did that a few years back and swear I lost at least half a stone in 6 hours! And that was with a fish and chip supper afterwards!!
