So I had my first lesson tonight. Very basic stuff. Turns out I had a good grip (he only altered it ever so slightly), my alignment is also very good, but my posture is terrible. He has set me a few drills to try and correct this, but the new position feels very uncomfortable and I feel all off balance. It is going to take a lot of getting used to. Thinking about investing in a back support to see if it helps. Anyone else use one at all?

If you are having problems with the back it might help to get there early and do some stretching to help loosen up and maybe hit a small basket (not flat out) to get everything ready. It's good news on the grip and alignment and I'm sure the posture will come easily. However these are the little things that tend to go wrong without you noticing so its important to keep checking them regularly

Thanks for that Homer. I always do a lot of stretching before I start as my back does go from time to time, will try hitting a few balls now too. Unfortunately 10 years working as a carpet fitter when I was younger have left me with dodgy knees and back.

Lawrence you might want to try yoga and pilates. The yoga will help to improve flexibility in those stiff carpet fitting muscles and pilates will help improve your core strength which will aid your posture. As Homer says a good warm up is important too. Hope this helps and the lessons go well for you.

Yoga and Pilates? Would I not be the only bloke in the class? Might look into it.

:D

If that doesn't float your boat, get yerself doing some core strength exercises, that will help your back no end.

My lower back pain all but went away when I actually had some core strength. Now I've not seen the inside of a gym for nearly 3 months, it's beginning to creep back in.
