Playing Friday in my first ever comp - in which I have drawn the club president! All new to me but I hope to hack my way round and not embarrass myself, or him, too much.
Relax we all have to start somewhere. Enjoy it. If you hit in trouble play a provisional. If you are unsure how to proceed ask before doing anything, particularly touching the ball. Don't try too hard and don't go for the heroic. If you played every hole as a par 5 that gets you round in 90 net 62 and won't be too far away. What you gain on the par 3's and the short 4's you can then give back on the longer holes
The first competition I played in was a teams of three stapleford with each tem comprising of a high, mid and low handicap player. I was the high handicap player and being one of the first teams to tee off I was dreading it.
Off goes our low handicapper, with a massive drive - straight out of bounds much to the amuusement of the crowd
Next was our mid handicapper who realising we may be up against it took his 3 wood and hit a good respectable 200 yd shot.
On my turn one of the better players told me to take my time setting up and to take a nice slow controlled back swing back and smooth swing through the ball.
I did exactly what he said and produced a very nice 250 yd drive right down the middle. That first shot set me up for the day and we had a very good round winning the competition.
