Fancy a 32 % pay rise ?

Put their salary up to c£75k-£80k as it is a very long hours and quite a stressful job, however, remove their expenses which was Maggies way of giving them an increase without an official pay rise at that time- the expenses are abused and certain MP's actually make a profit on expenses, they should be ONLY for money actually paid out by the individual in the pursuit of their official role, accompanied by a legitimate receipt.

toatally agree, i know that in local government they are very very strict on what you can and cant claim. they have cross party committees and all they do is argue. my father claimed an extra 1.5 miles more than usual for a journey and they went to town on him. until he pointed out that the bridge they normally cross over was beeing replaced.

It would seem their expenses are a mere trifle compared to their colleagues in Brussels.........the MEPs
Now that's where the BIG money is.

It is very strange that folk will happily knock low paid MP's whilst accepting very ordinary footballers and the likes of Jonathon Ross being paid at the very least ten times a year more.
£55m for Gareth Bale......we have all gone to hell in a handcart.

Don't think I'd ever use the word low in a sentence relating to MP's pay... Think most would consider their total remuneration 'package' as being well above the national average...

Sportsmen/entertainers 'pay' is based on 'market forces' reckon if same rules were applied to MP's they might just about get three and a tanner a week...

Sorry but as far as I'm concerned they are overpaid and don't justify the salary they are on at present never mind a huge increase. Jobs for the boys.

My understanding is that Mrs T introduced the ludicrous expenses system because she feared the backlash of giving them a pay rise in the 80s.

I'd say pay them more but change their expenses system such that it's in line with all other public sector workers. Also lets have them clock in and out at Westminster. Oh yeah and performance related pay with annual reviews.

And work longer, and lose their lump sum pension and lose their final salary pension scheme and make it average salary like they're doing to all other public sector workers bar themselves!

Although your suggested pension provision is too generous. Let's make it money purchase like we've been lumbered with in the private sector!

I have always believed that MP's are underpayed. Compare thier salaries to GP's, police inspectors and senior council officers

agreed - hugely underpaid (with the exception of the PM when pension is included)

increase basic pay
increase financial accountability with regard to everything else
remove pensions which have effectively become an unknown payment for the majority of people trying to judge what's being paid (this applies to a lot of public sector roles btw)

Its a can of worms this one

On the one hand, MP's are public sector workers and should be treated the same ie pay freezes etc

On the other it seems silly that an MP who represents a constituency of many thousands and who collectively is in charge of the country, should be paid less than a head teacher of a average sized school or a solicitor in a medium sized practice. (not taking anything away from teachers OK)

If you dont pay them properly, a few might become open to "Outside influences" . Its certainly a job that does not appeal to me at all. You might lose at the next election, so no job security, you might have to travel to London from your consistuency and stay away from your family for 5 days a week (some may think this a bonus).

You have to be super squeaky clean, 1000% of the time, Swear on the golf course and its a resignable offence

I dont like MPs, but until we can come up with another system we are stuck with them, But they do need their pay to reflect the responsibilities they hold

I laugh at this at times......Firstly, if they dont like the pay then dont run for MP. Secondly, some tend to think we need to pay the right rate to get the right people. Well, we've been paying lots of bankers big money over the years and they're still on the take. Thirdly PMs gain lots of other benefits like final salary pensions that they all want us to give up for the good of the country. If an MP has to give up over ill health it's worth about 30k per year to them. Then we have the expenses thing, they claim for every single little thing...food and all. Then they have their second house package.......Yey, if they dont like it then do one.

Underpaid my chocolate starfish.

I reckon MP's remuneration package should be based on what the average working man gets in the private sector plus say 10%... Might actually get them to be realistic about what real life is all about and work a bit harder for the common man...

We had a 1% rise in last 3years..
If I did the same job up country if be on up to 4quid an hour more! Even in Devon I get 50p an hour more lol... And this is with the same company kind of depressing lol

Spot on Tommo.

I work in the public sector,i've not had a pay rise in 8 years,my final salary pension is now gone, and the pension i now have i'll have to work longer, and pay more into to get less out.
And these MP's think that there hard done by !!!!

They are actually getting 1%. The same as other civil servants.
But don't let the facts get in the way of a nice blinkered, bitter rant.

If someone asked me anonymously what I thought I should get paid, it would be more than I'm currently on. It's hardly a surprise that they responded this way.

I wouldn't be an MP. Looks like a right PITA, and this thread is what "the people" think of them.
