The Grinder Of Pars (Semi Crocked)
Did I miss a post about your new iron thought? did you get fit? what else did you hit? and so on and so on!! PLEASE!!
If I must...
The MP58's are great irons - truly great.
But if I didn't have my "A" game they could be a bitch. They have forgiveness built-in but they are so easy to work that I found I could often overcook a draw (especially). They've still got a bit of value in them so I started my research.
Narrowed it down to MP53's, AP2's, RazrTours, Wilson FGTours and Snake Eyes 685X.
Bearing in mind that I wanted to move back to a cavity iron, the Snake Eyes and the Wilson were a bit too blade-like and therefore too similar to the 58's. The Snake Eyes were gorgeous though!
Looking down on the Ap2's I just felt they were too shiney!! Daft reason to reject them but there you are.
So it was down to the MP53's vs RazrTour.
Performance was so similar in a blind test I probably couldn't have told you which was which. The clincher for me though was the price. £500 for the Mizzys or £400 for the Callys - with the added bonus that they're virtually indestructible. They came with the S300 shaft as standard - same as the 58's and although the lofts are generally 2 degrees stronger there isn't much difference in distances. Had the lie checked and the same spec as the 58's ( 1 degree flat) gave me a solid, in the middle strike. Looking down at address there really isn't much between the 58's and the RXT's, sure the RXT's top line is a bit chunkier but not a lot.
All the reviews I've read of the RXT's said they are as good a club as you can get - so far I'm in the camp that agrees with that.
During today's round, as it was so quiet, I went back to a par 3 tee and hit 10 8 irons to the green. YOu could have thrown a blanket over them.
