Fairway - Hybrid

A fairway wood is club designed to hit long off of short grass and the tee. A hybrid is designed to replace a longer iron.

The idea is not to think of hybrids versus fairways, rather hybrids versus irons. Hybrids apparently have advantages here; they are apparently easier to hit in general, and especially out of longer grass that might rule out the use of a long iron.

Why would big butch golfers never dream of hitting a 5, 7 or 9 wood but are happy to use the hybrid equivilants? :D

Must admit having taken up golf again a few months ago, getting myself kitted out with new gear, I think I have only used my hybrid three times. For me it has the distance of a two iron but what seems like the trajectory of a six iron. Just need to get my head around it to get the most out of it.

Buy the K15 and the 4 and 5 irons are replaced by hybrids anyway. To answer Bobs (rhetorical) question I guess its because us butch male golfers know we can tame the wild beasts known as fairway woods in the same way we think we have control over that predator of bad scores the driver

Love my Cobra 7 wood, goes about 5 iron distance but goes high and sits down very softly. Works from fairway, semi, or short tee, ideal for mid distance par 3s. :)
Got to admit that I'm not as big and butch as I used to be though ;)

Mine has the trajectory of a 2 iron but the trajectory of a bottle rocket tied to a cat's tail.
well which one is it? :D

LOL. Oops. I meant distance of a 2 iron...

It seems to me that fairways over 5 are somewhat obsolete.

a "7" isn't a bad club. I found a "9" in a bargain bin and bought it just for fun. It's completely ridiculous...the shaft is as long as a 3 iron and it has the loft of a 5 iron. Not very reliable either, I'm sure I can hit a 4 iron better any day of the week.

Exactly, persevere and learn to hit 3 and 4 irons, they really arnt that difficult to get a reasonable result from. Add in that hybrids dont exactly hit themselves either.

Interesting comments, thank you all. Father Christmas brought me a Cleveland Hybrid DST 4i. Well in fact it was AG in their sale, and I tried a number on the range with the man from AG who was most helpful, came away with the Cleveland and can't wait to try it on the course - weather permitting.
