Not wanting to pick on English golfers since the same can easily be said of Scots (other than one Lawrie win) but I'm a bit fed up with this particular argument.... (it's often used to justify Monty's failure to win one, for example) There have been > 60 majors during this "Tiger Era" of which he has won 14 so plenty of opportunity for others to pick some up!

Agree completely, when you look at some of the "should be also rans" that have picked up majors in that time it just proves that it has been possible to win a major even though Tiger has played!

I think the Irish have a different attitude to sport in general, i just can't put my finger on what or why thats is tho. The tourism hits the nail on the head for me all the clubs make juniors very welcome any time i've played with my son in Portstewart and Donegal areas, my club still has a very look down the nose attitude my most of the members about juniors which is poor as they can become the life blood of the club.

Crawford.
Ayrshire have a decent junior golf set up but seem to have a very poor coaching set up. Gregor would probably be the best judge of that, ask how much county coaching he does next time you see him?
From what I have seen of Scottish development, at the top, it looks poor and underfunded. The quality of the players seem good though. Like the fitba we seem to be good up until they reach 17/18 year old.

England is very well funded but seems to waste much of that working at the top level with players who are not good enough.

In GENERAL terms from my experience, a 4 handicap junior will get much more funding and coaching in England than a 2 handicapper will in Scotland.

Brendy......tell us why the Irish are so good?

Gregor who?

Where does the funding come from? It through the golf club or the regional golf union??

I think its due to the XBOX Playstation culture that you hardly see any kids playing golf, football etc...

This...

When my lads were kids and they wanted new 'stuff' for the Atari/Amiga... I used to say instead of that why not spend 'our' money on 'stuff' that got 'us' out of the house and do something active and proper 'interesting' with our lives...

Gregor Howie..Barassie......sorry thought he was WK.
The juniors are funded by the county as far as I know.
They have one of the best structures I have seen.

Therefore I would suggest its elitist. One club benefits probably due to an Ayrshire Golf Union representative being a member. It was the same as a junior in Renfrewshire. If you played at Cochrane Castle you had an advantage.

If this is being funded by the County then may I ask if its being replicated at Ardeer, Largs, Troon Muni etc etc???

I think that the Irish are so welcoming to juniors is probably the reason for their success.
Scotland and England tend to see juniors as an evil necessity.
I also can state that the clubs who allow male juniors to play in club competitions tend to be the ones who produce the best young players. When you look at where the best golfers come from it is generally a Muni or small rural club. Very seldom from a top club.

Glencruitten in Oban is a very good example. Some fine youngsters starting to emerge from there.

From my experience I would say that Scotland was more fragmented than elitist. The 'tanks on lawns' thinking rather than 'joined up' thinking.
England, from my experience, is definately elitist.

It's because we're the pits!!! Like at most sports, our mentality is suspect and that's where we come undone on the biggest stage. It's beggars belief that we've not won a major since Faldo in 1996, especially given the world rankings of the likes of Westwood, Donald, Rose, Casey, Poulter etc. I don't see it changing any time soon either! Rose looks in half decent nick but the rest are on the downturn, even Donald who I thought would kick on has a massive task on his hands over the next few years to stay in touch.

Tee to green Lee Westwood played the best final round at Augusta.
Peter Alliss said he had an outside chance of winning and for once I did not disagree with him..
He didn't putt badly but the ball just would not go in the hole.

Yeah he did, his chipping is horrific though and although he's putting a lot better this year you can tell there is all round anxiety when he's not plum on the green every hole.
