Engine remapping

Unless your really committed, I’d just go tuner box. The likes of TDI tuning is ideal for people who aren’t into tuning but want that little bit more performance.

Insurers will raid your wallet and any warranty will be void.

Marginally gain under normally driving but if you drive as before you might get better mpg.

A full remap is better than just a tuning box, but you be better looking for Nissan/Renault specialists for such things.
You would need to advise your insurance co once done and each time you do a renewal.
However having had a daughter who had a Renault diesel in a Nissan I would say don’t do it. The Renault diesel aren’t the best and can be a real nightmare for even the simplest of things, and putting more pressure on such a delicate engine would be risky.

It depends on your reasons for doing it, outright power, Id be worrying about longevity. If it was for a mix of power and economy, Id say go for it. My 530d is mapped and goes like its just been flung off the shovel. My old Impreza was very dull without it, when I sold it on it was running 50% more power at around 310bhp on standard internal parts and was an absolute hoot to drive plus I did all of the mapping myself. I would still happily use a tuning box as well these days though as their R&D has come on from the original resistor in a box garbage.

This isn't true in all cases.

I have an Audi S4 (B8) which has gone from 333bhp up to 450bhp. I had the Revo Stage 1+ Remap plus S-Tronic Stage 1 gearbox map, FSI supercharger pulley upgrade and FSI air intake kit. I am also booked in to have a Milltek exhaust added which will add a few more horses.

All of these additions were declared to my insurance company and they were happy to include at no extra cost. Obviously it will depend on your insurance company as they do have to be 'mod friendly', some will cancel a policy with any additions so it's worth checking with them first.

In answer to your question of is it worth it, to me definitely, it's made the car far more responsive, it's a blast to drive and the MPG is (marginally) better.

The cost of the Revo side was £1,800, the exhaust will be another £1,900 on top.

My advice would be (as Bunkermagnet has suggested), go for a full remap and definitely ensure you get something tailored to your car and not a generic remap. The latter are cheap and rarely worth the effort, plus they can damage your car as it won't have been written to take into account the parameters of your car.

I used to have a Volvo XC60 and was on a Volvo forum. I lot of people on there had them done. It gave them better economy and they talked about the power delivery being smoother and more pokey. Clearly they are not driving XC60's like sports cars but the extra oopmmh went down well. That engine had the capacity for expansion so the remap worked really well.

I'd recommend checking out a forum for the type of car to see what others have done and recommend. Speak to your insurer before you do it to see if there will be issues. As has been said, some don't mind, others wont touch you.

Have you had your Skoda superb done (or anyone else)?

I do 12k plus a year, so wondering if worth it if I'm going to keep it for 4 more years.

Take a looksie over at Briskoda.......
You may well find an answer there.
The original Superb with the 1.9pd was an excellent engine to have things done, but I am led to believe the 2.0l CR engine VW now produce isn't as "adjustment" friendly.

I had it done on an Audi A4 estate 3L engine a few years ago

Was worth it around £ 300 a local independent VW/Audi specialist

Better performance and fuel econony

What if he’s still within warrenty? Or his ECU is sealed (therefore needing to be opened) and something goes wrong.
There are pro’s and cons for both options. For someone wanting to eek out some more power/economy safely out a car. Tuning boxes are very user friendly and leave ZERO evidence behind after removal.

I recently had my Kia 1.6 diesel done.
It's gone from 89bhp to 137bhp and is 10% more economical!
On a long run I get over 65mpg ................... and it also goes much better when I want it to.
89bhp was never enough.
It's a totally different car now, much more pleasant to drive.
Best mod I've ever done to a car.

If hes under warranty, then its his choice and gamble.
The problem with tuning boxes is that they arent as accurate as a bespoke remap, and do leave tell tale readings within the system. Also there is the chance of forgetting to take it out each time the car goes in for any work. Most remaps are software done via a laptop connected the same way the garage will interogate the car.
Personally I wouldnt remap a car until the warranty was gone, or I wasnt bothered about having the warranty. After that might be a different story.

A few weeks ago I had a job done under warranty without any issues.

Well done, but I wouldn’t disclose any more than that;).

Having had VW group vehicles for a long time, I can assure you that given the chance VW HO will take any opportunity they can to not pay for something.
