Guys

I wondered if one of you pc geniuses could help me out. I cant open any email attachments. It doesnt matter what format it comes in it wont open. Usually when I click on an attachment it gives 3 options , open, save and cancel. I dont get the open option and even if I save it i then cant open it from the saved folder.

Anyone come across this or would know of a fix ?

Heres hoping

JD

Edit : I can open them when I check my emails from my work comp though , so I guess its some sort of problem with my home comp. I use hotmail btw

Sorry if this sounds obvious, but do you have the relevant software on your home PC to open the attachments? i.e. if it is a Microsoft Word document, do you have Word installed?

Secondly is your home PC running some form of 'pop-up blocker' that could be blocking the attachments?

Which program are you using to access your emails

Outlook, Outlook Express. Windows Mail, or Windows Live Mail
or are you using Webmail (Hotmail, Yahoo Gmail etc)

Let me know and I shall point you in the right direction

Hey Fragger

I'm using hotmail that I access via internet explorer.

It's only been a recent thing so I wondered if it was something to do with an update that came through a while back :D

From the web

Because email attachments can contain viruses and other harmful files, the software installed on our computers often tries to protect us from attachments. In doing so, this software prevents us from opening those attachments, even if the attachment and email is legitimate. There are ways around this, but it’s best to proceed with caution. Because of the damage viruses can cause, it’s always a good idea to make sure that the attachment you are trying to open is legitimate and safe before opening it.

Although most trustworthy antivirus programs scan your email and attachments, it never hurts to save an attachment to your hard drive and let the antivirus program scan it there. Never assume that an attachment is safe until it has been scanned; even friends may unknowingly send you an infected file. Use your email program to save the attachment to a location on your hard drive. Then, open your antivirus program and scan the file you just saved. If it’s too late, and you suspect you may have opened an infected attachment,

I have once or twice struggled to open an attachment (with a problem as above) - maybe it's an anti-virus issue?
Either that or maybe the email server at Hotmail has thrown a wobbly.

OK Dodger Lets have a look.

If you were using an email program i could tell you exactly what the problem is, but using Webmail via Internet explorer is different.

try these

1, Open Internet explorer, hit Tools, Internet options, security. look at the box that says "Reset all zones to default level", if it is greyed out move to next option.
If it is black, click it , hit apply, now try hotmail.

2, Open Internet explorer, hit "Tools", Internet options, advanced, reset.

Say yes

you will need to restart IE, does Hotmail work now?

3 Go to http://www.mozilla-europe.org/en/firefox/

Download Firefox, (Another program that does the same job as IE.

Does Hotmail behave with this??

Let me know
