Just a reminder about fires. Popped the tumble dryer on today to dry a sheet whilst I was putting the shopping away.

Next thing there was a big bang and acrid smoke started coming out of it. Luckily it didn't develop into a fire.

I had called 999 and the fire brigade arrived quickly.

All ok and the fire will be reported to trading standards by them.

Posting as a reminder to not have any electrical appliances on when you're asleep or out of the house. Also to have working smoke alarms
 
Fires in tumble driers are normally caused by a failure to clean the filters before switching them on.
Hotpoint/Creda had a major recall a few years ago because of lint build up catching fire and the new ones had a different filter system.
Any vent pipe going through a wall etc is supposed to be cleaned out regularly as well.

Nope mine is hardly used and regularly cleaned. Lint filter cleaned after very use. vents at back regularly cleaned as well.

Firemen also confirmed there wasn't a build up. This one was a free replacement by Hotpoint for one of the faulty ones.

Did you check the recall @Bunkermagnet posted a few weeks back? Hotpoint were one of the brands

Sounds like the motor capacity may have blown. That would give the acid smoke, but unlikely to have developed any further. I wouldnt though repair it, as the smell will stay with it a long time, and you will never have the confidence in it.
There are brands I would lean towards, and brands I wouldnt have. Across all the budget range to a point.

It's beyond repair as the fireman pulled it apart. Don't think we are going to bother replacing it.

Sorry, I realised after I posted that the last list was dryers made by Haier/Hoover. It doesnt hurt to check though as Hotpoint/Indesit has had quite a few through the years.

Can you not claim on your contents insurance for a replacement?

Hadn't thought of that but then again the premium may well go up for the next few years so not be worth it. Will have a think about that.

Always worth reading the policy first. You may well find that any damage caused by the fire etc is covered but not the appliance itself as this may be seen as 'inherent defect'.

If the appliance is covered also worth checking any excess and some companies may treat damage to the appliance as one claim and damage to building e.g paintwork as another and apply 2 excesses.
