How do these work?

Am off to Turkey later this week. O2 want £7 a day to use my phone over there. I’ll be ringing home most nights, bit of light browsing (no streaming), WhatsApp.

I’ve seen e-sims advertised for a quid for 1gb of data.

If I get one of these, does it use a different number? I need to be contactable on my current number as got a load of family stuff going on.

Anything else / drawbacks I need to be aware of?

Do you use a normal SIM ATM? I assume your phone is e SIM compatible

For example I can run 2 Sims at the same time

One e SIM and one physical SIM

Both numbers will ring through but I can pick which one uses data and calls out

You can hold something like 5 e SIM "profiles" at once but only one can be active at a time

They are really simple to use

I swapped my phone over Xmas and I use e SIM. Took about 10 mins on phone to swap with them rather than having to have a new SIM sent out and wait to port my number

I think (but not 100% sure) that to be contactable on your normal number you need data services on which will incur charges. Maybe best option is WiFi calling over WhatsApp when connected to free WiFi otherwise use an esim and notify the relevant people you are temporarily on a different number?

yes, got it installed no bother, iphone 12.

My recollection from using it in the states was that in settings you can set up each sim individually. Hence turn data roaming off for the UK sim, and all comms with WWW are done via the data allowance on the local sim. Super easy to do, and there are a shedful of cheap options out there depending on the data you use. I am planning to use in in Oz this year - and the beauty is you can set it up before you go, and it only starts the term once you land in the country and it connects to that service.
