Hi,

anyone used this before Nike Sumo2 SQ 5900 Square Driver , thinking of buying a driver and seen this one for £97 2008 model.

Would like peoples views please, also I guess it is going cheap due to being 2008 model ? Anyone know diff between 2008 and 2009 model , not that it will make any diff to me.

Cheers

Midnight...

I have the previous model which I picked up about this time last year for a reduced price as the 5900 was about to be launched.
I am alot more consistent with it over my old driver, I find a lot more of the short grass. It does give a high ball flight which I think loses me a bit of distance but it is a small price when I play from the fairway more often.

Never used Nike as I was put off by the noise and the colour scheme.

100% Agree with Homer but if you can get past the looks and noise its a great club, I had a play with one a few weeks back and loved it but couldn't deal with the yellow and DING it made.

You can get some ace deals on the golf channel / JJB on it, think its £100 with a load of free balls and something else free.

Oh forgot about the difference question, Apart from the looks and huge price difference, who knows. Mike Harris and GM seemed to love it from the review they gave the new Nike drivers.

Couldn't justify the £260 difference between the new / old model.

Old = £100
New = £360

I also considered one of these.

Turned it down on 2 counts.

1) the length of the shaft (too long)
2) the sound of it

3) ?? because it's got a make of shaft I have no idea of.

Then again, it could suit you a dream.

I found that I lost about 20 yards in distance when I had the Nike Sasquatch 4 wood, me and Nike just didnt gel, I think the shaft was not the one for me, however the Diamana shaft is a good shaft, obviously not for me though!

If you get the chance to hit it then give it a bash, you have nothing lose and alot to gain if you like it!

Well Midnight you’re in luck as I’ve just been tried both the 5000 and 5900, 9.5 stiff on both models. That’s the current models 2008, the new ones are due anytime now.
I’ve got the round 2007 9.5 stiff 460. I’m not normally a stiff shaft user but I tried this driver by chance early 2008 and I’ve had it for a while now. The 5900 SQ model doesn’t sound as bad as the earlier model, in fact it sounds okay and no where near as noisy as the Srixon Zti I once had. It has a shallower face than the 5000 but you can still tee it fairly high if you want. I tried a couple of shots deliberately low on the tee and although I caught them on the sole of the club the ball still went quite far and straight. The shaft is about 25mm longer than my current Nike but I didn’t see any extra distance TBH. When laid on the deck the 5900 sits slightly like a draw model but in reality it was straight when hitting the ball. When I gripped it like I would my own driver, what I think is the face square to the target, then it went higher with a fade. In saying that, when it sits on the grass it’s not bad. I’m nit picking here but the way a driver sits on the ground is important to me. I hit 150 balls with this driver and I hit a lot of balls over the markers I was lined up to. I didn’t hit any hooks and that’s my problem from time to time, but I found nothing that said to me “use it” like I first got when I used my present Nike. It is a good driver but I prefer what I’ve got now and even after trying the standard 5000 I still prefer my older model.

As a footnote, the guy I got the old model from has had 2 drivers since I bought the Nike from him……he wanted to buy it back. He’s just got a new 5000. Oh, and I know a 1 handicapper who uses the SQ model ditching a D2 for it. He doesn’t like the look but he doesn’t care. Just for your info, I play off 6 and I don’t hit the ball all that far.

Midnight - as you can see from my sig. I play with a Sumo 11.5 deg reg and absolutely love it.

I think that the design is really good and the sound that it makes is nowhere near as bad as the Mizuno MX-560 that I also have which I need ear defenders for!

Being 11.5deg it has more height but that is far better according to the VLM as it gives you more carry and hence more distance (well, thats what I was told) especially in the winter.

I bought mine from online golf thinking that if i didnt get on with it then at least I could exchange it in their 90 day exchange policy, but I really dont want to.

If you want one online golf are now doing them for £78.29 which surely is worth a punt.
