I had a fitting the other week.
Like the Craw I was getting way too much spin with the Cally so thought I'd just see what was decent on the market these days.
After speaking to the fitter for a while and hitting some with my own driver he suggested a few options and I tried them (all with 9.5* and with either the standard stiff or tour stiff spec shafts):

Titleist 910D2 - too much spin, quite wayward and similar to my current club.

Titleist 910D3 - when I hit them well they were good & long but I just didn't feel right with that club.

Ping I15 - with the standard stiff shaft it was like the Cally, but with the stiffer, higher kick point one it was very nice and carrying 10yds past the Cally.

Taylormade R9 ST - like with the I15 the regular stiff shaft was not right, but with the TP shaft it was excellent. Only problem is that they aren't certain if they can get me that club as they are being fazed out for the R11.

As a result of the above my choices are:
1 - TM R9 with a tour stiff shaft (Voodoo I think?)
2 - Ping with the equivalent shaft as in the TM.
3 - STick with what I've got (it's done fairly well for me this yr)

I don't know there accuracy but average carry distances for the above were:
FT-5 - 240yds
910D - 260yds
I15 - 250yds
R9 - 255yds

I went in search of a new driver today as I felt that I was launching my G15 far too high.

I selected all the clubs that I liked the look of and tried them on the range with the aid of trackman. My list of lucky bats were :-

Callaway Diablo Octane Black Tour

Nike Machspeed Black

Mizuno 630

The new Titleist range at £320 was very quickly eliminated.

Anyway onto the trackman and the results were fairly conclusive in nailing shut the lid on my G15. My current set up saw the ball coming off the face with an incredible 3800 RPM, that's almost 1000 RPM above optimum RPM.

To cut a long story boring the Callaway was next to bite the bullet and fall by the wayside. I felt that this club was possibly a little on the stiff side for me. The Project X shaft just didn't feel that great.

I liked the Mizuno but that white Fubuki shaft is just plain awful to look down upon, I found it very offputting.

The Nike Machspeed Black, WOW, this was the club I liked the look of best and it performed very well. It also had a Fubuki shaft which is only 50g in weight. It felt nice, it sat nice and it was certainly the most consistent of the drivers I tried today.

Am I man enough to tell you my stats?

Well according to Trackman my average carry was 226, running out to 250, and my RPM fell too just over 3000. I was told to add between 5-8% onto these figures for the crap range balls but it seems fairly average to me. Plus the 0 degrees temperature doesn't help.

Did I buy the Nike? No as I want to try the TM Supertri first and possibly the new Srixon Z-STAR driver if I can find it.

where did you try out these clubs
