Driver Head Covers

Hi,

I have being browsing for a new driver i currently use one of the old Great Big bertha Drivers and love it very dearly.
But I notice on most new drivers the head covers don't cover the Graphite shafts, have they come up with some new coating on the shafts to stop from scratching? Or has anyone had problems with scratching?

No, I just assume the manufacturers think we buy a new driver every 2 months, and hence change it before it gets damaged.

Even worse are the Nike driver covers as they have a clip at the bottom to hold it to the shaft which does a lovely job of scrathing it up without the help of a bag.

Yep, just got a D2. The head cover is stunning, has magnetic closures, is armoured in case you drop it, but no, it doesn't protect the shaft at all. Unless you have a tall bag.

I would have to check tonight to see how far down the shaft it extends, but I don't remember it sticking past the bag opening as a mate with a Dcomp was moaning about it.

The old 907 cover was worse, as it had a zip fastener, which scratched the paint on the head.

Most modern day wood head covers are crap...the ones on the G10's are, they offer no protection to the shaft at all.
I bought myself a really nice set of headcovers with the longer socks on them when I visited St George's Hill a month or two ago. Lovely they are, dark blue to match my other Mizuno gear, with the club crest emblazoned on the top of each one. I saw them in the pro shop window marked up at £14.99 so I thought "I'll have them".
The guy searched high and low for one for my 460cc headed driver, eventually found one.
He came out, rung them through the till and then said "That will be £44.97 please Sir"...

St George's Hill is a bit snooty, so wanting to fit in I just paid up. Couldn't afford a beer that night after the game though. Only had fifty quid with me

iv had a D2 for coming up to 2 months now and it still looks 1 week old. i think that although the headcover does not cover the shaft a bag like the nike sasquatch tour stand bag is great and doesnt let any shafts touch each other so they cant scratch each other, and also the bag itself doesnt not scratch the club

My Titleist 906 3 and 5 wood headcovers are great. They cover the shaft all the way into the bag. Same with the 585 hybrid. But my Ping Rapture headcover barely touches the shaft - its got more padding than Jordan but.........

What's the gripe?

I've had a few drivers and the cover goes over the head and protects enough of the shaft to reach the dividers on my bag.

Why would they need to go further?

Shortest cover I've had = Ping G5......never managed to scratch the shaft accidentally whilst carrying/trolleying my clubs about.....

My Cobra LD Fast headcovers go all the way down - driver and 3, 5 and 7 woods...

I also have G10's, they are crap i have a powakddy delux cart bag and it had started to mark my driver (after only about 3 months in the bag), so i bought a set of powakaddy head covers, they look lovely with my bag and freeway trolley and they have a long sock to protect the shafts.

Problem solved as far as i'm concerned.

Yep! I can confirm the zip on the cover of the 907 does indeed bugger up the paintwork on head and shaft!

Amazing all the zillions of $/£ the manufacturers put into driver research and no ones though to make the covers longer!!!....doh!
