Why do people in the UK tolerate such high fuel prices?

In AZ at the moment gas is $1.99 per gallon that I think with the exchange rate works out to around 33p per liter.

There has to have been a time when fuel prices were reasonable? In the USA there literally would be rioting for such extortionate prices.

A little simplistic I feel. The price of UK fuel includes a lot of taxation that goes into the Government coffers. This taxation is used to provide other services. One of the services provided in the UK is the NHS, something the USA doesn't appear to provide for its citizens who have to provide that themselves. How much of the money you save on fuel do you spend on health insurance? And why do the citizens of the USA tolerate a lack of free health care?
