Do lessons work?

Fore,
Just for arguements sake, say you have lots of faults in your swing, your pro wont be able to fix them all at once.
What he should do is watch you hit a few balls and then ask you what area you need help in.
Are you having problems with the contact? Duffs, thins, tops etc
Are you having problems with your direction, slices hooks etc
Or do you need more distance?
Based on what you reply, he will then concentrate on the area you want to improve most.

When i spoke to the Pro yesterday i said i was particularly concerned about my fairway wood shots above all else. I get by ok with my irons up to about 160 yards and pitching and putting is ok but all aspects of my game are open to improvement or perhaps endorsing some of my good points too.
I am hoping to improve my shots into the 170 to 200 yard area especially off the tee as my club has a couple of particularly long par 3's which i would like to approach with a bit more confidence.

I'd have to say yes.

Had a incurable slice (or so i thought).

Every magazine/DVD/Internet tip i read could sort it.

5 minutes into my 1st lesson I'd hit my 1st draw.

Ok, i still manage to fade a few (bad shot is more often that not a hook now!) but i now know why i do and know what to work on to stop it.

Golf is fun when your hitting it decent - straightish, decent distance, even with a few (or more) duffs, if you know why you hit a bad shot. There's nothing more soul destroying than hitting a shot and thinking it's a beauty and seeing it slice as far as it went forward and having no idea why!!! (in my opinion)

I'm a 25 handicapper & I was out playing golf with a lad from work last night who would be at the same level roughly as I am & we met a man who's married to a girl from home. I've seen him about the place though I never spoke to him before but as he was standing there while the 2 of us hit our shots I said hello.

He's a 6 handicap & after a minute chatting he told the lad I was playing with that he had a good swing & he could tell he had lessons, even though the 2 of us both hit crap shots, strangely he didn't mention my swing...... The other lad has had a few lessons over the last 2 months with the local professional at the club & even I can tell that he's hitting the ball straighter & longer than before so after hearing what the 6 handicapper said I've booked myself in for a lesson next week.

I had a few last year and am looking to have more when finances allow.

Was talking to a fella at work who had his first lesson this week and can now hit his 6 iron 250 yards...

That is when I started to drift off!

Looking forward to playing with him next week and seeing the true distances!

I started playing six weeks ago courtesy of lessons my Mrs got me for my 30th. I can't comment on those who have had no lessons or used them to correct swing flaws. What I will say is I'm striking the ball cleanly and hitting my six iron 180 yards and the consistency and distance are improving after each lesson. I've had three lessons and am now waiting for my custom fit clubs before stepping out on the par 3 course and identifying playing faults to work on.

I can't imagine how you could begin to teach yourself and though I have looked at stuff on t'internet and read a couple of books between my second and third lesson and it messed me up a bit because I had too many thoughts in my head during my swing.

Hats off to the low handicappers who are self taught but for me taking lessons is the only way to fly!
