Evening all,

just finished reading the DMD test in this months GM and noticed that the iPhone apps scored badly for two main reasons: potential damage to your phone and signal.

If you know your course has a great signal but are concerned about damaging your unit you might want to consider this.

I've got one for mine to protect it when I go camping, my young son and my general clumsyness. It has a belt clip which would be useful for getting quick access on the course and coupled to golfshot gps works out much cheaper than all the other options. Hope this is helpful.

My only concern with the DMD test is that there were so many testers. One persons view is going to be different to anothers no matter how much you try to be objective. Would it have been better to have had 1 player using all DMD's at the same course over a fortnight (or 2 days if you do maths like TonyN!) to get a better picture? They could then compare like for like much easier.
I wonder where the SC2.5 would have come in the list? Similar to SC5 but B&W screen but 100 quid less money...

Hmm, Iphones are real cheap. £35 a month, two year contract, plus £80 up front. Total cost £920. Seems bit steep to me, think I'll stick with Skycaddie. And it's waterproof.

Current mobile, Nokia 5700, two year contract, £15 per month, total cost £360. Skycaddie SG5 @ £300. Annual cost £40 per year. So phone and SG5 add up to £740, a saving over two years of £180.

Think I'll leave the Iphone alone. A bit too rich for me. And at that price I don't think I would risk it on a golf course anyway.

I bought my missus an ipod touch....there's no way I'd take something like this out on the golf course (even if it was capable!)

I have an SG5, if I'd been buying one myself, I'd not have bothered upgrading/spending more from the basic model.

So far, so good. I'll tell more once it's seen some proper golf.

My issue was that no mention was made of having to pay the Skycaddie subscription every year even to use the courses already downloaded. Cancel the subscription and the whole unit is pretty useless. Certainly this makes some of the models more attractive propositions.

Whoa, hold the 'phone????

If you don't renew...you LOSE the courses. That's NOT good.

Actually, almost as bad, my missus bought one from AG and "wasn't told" (her words) that you had to pay to use it (properly). Me and AG had words about this.....

I'll be renewing come the time, but that is very poor indeed. That'd be like buying a sat nav and the whole unit being useless without paying for updates.

I have the G300 shotmiser and they tested the new g50 or something and complained a fiver was too expensive a course. To me looking at the sc5 the graphics are poor compared to a lot of others yet it won???

I was concerned about that but when you consider that Skycaddie provides updates to the units operating software and updates the course information it's worth the subscription.

I don't know if the other manufacturers offer this service or how they map their courses.

Hi murph,

Think you got the wrong end of the stick. Was just suggesting that iPhone apps could be a cheaper option for people who already have an iPhone and don't have a DMD.

I'm still torn on whether I will ever get one but giving freecaddie a try. As it will cost me nowt to have a look.

Tiger, take a look at this recent thread

Golfshot GPS

I've got a SkyCaddie SG 2.5 and I have Golfshot GPS for my iPhone as well.

I've also used a number of other iPhone GPS solutions. TeeShot Live, FreeCaddy, Caddy, Plum Caddy etc etc.

In my opinion golfshot is the best iPhone solution out there right now.

And to be honest, the dedicated solutions are better. But not £200 better !!

If I didn't already have a SkyCaddie I would be more than happy to just use GolfShot.

I think a longer term test would have been better.

After all, these things tend to either work or not straight out of the box but its after a few weeks of living with it that the faults, problems and issues tend to come out.

I have the T mobile G1 phone, which uses the Droid market, and installed Freecaddie for free (no! really!!) it works a treat and to map a course personally is the easiest thing ever.
The free version give you front/middle/back of greens, which is all I want really. You can upgrade to the pro version for $14.99 which gives you hazards etc.
As far as I know, this is it. No more payment required. I have been known to be wrong in the past though.

I too have an SC2.5 which I think is fantastic.

Unfortunately I will have to renew my sub as well soon.

Although I feel it's a bit expensive for me it's worth it.

I wonder what will happen to the many GPS devices that give there courses away for free. Without some sort of subs model I can see that a lot of them will not be around - surely unit sales must reach a saturation point and relying on unit sales alone may not be enough to sustain the company. You could then be left with a useless/expensive lump of gadget.

Pays your money as they say.............
