The joys of golf.

In my second year of playing now and due to the weather we have in SW Scotland havent had a chance to play much. After getting my handicap (26) at the tail end of last year ive been waiting to get playing in the medals, couldn't wait.

turned up this morning (early) so thought id play the first to see if anyone turned up. Turns out that isnt very legal.
Another member saw me as i approached the club house and informed me that as i had played "the course" i couldnt play in the competition.

Felt very annoyed and looked up my little freebie R&A rulebook i got at St. Andrews,(page 60, 7.1b) when i got home, Gutted!

so could anyone inform me what pages i should check next so next time i may tee-off before getting disqualified??

Davie :D

I'm sorry to hear of your DQ, even though the member was correct and you did inadvertently break the rules. The only other things I would warn you about is check you have no more than 14 clubs in the bag before setting out and check that your card is correct, comp, date, time and shots received. Other than that you should be OK. It's a hard lesson learned though. :(

nope would have thought i had battered his granny the way they treated me.

must have felt threatened from the new kid on the block.

I shall beat him one day though, is it sad that its now my new aim in golf ?

Anyone else been daft enough to get DQ before starting or am i just a dumplin!

Your just a dumplin pal!!!!!lol They should have let you play but excluded you from any sweep etc included. Yet again another example of a pompous twit.

You will pick up the etiquette of golf by playing with other golfers and learning as you go round. The more you play bounce games with other folk the more chance you have of coming across the fundamental rules of golf.

i didnt get told go home, but its club rules you have to give way to the medal so being only a 9 hole course its hard to stay out the way ,

and i was that disapointed about it all i just left.

Just wait until you win something and they DQ you, that day will come as well. Happened to me a few times, then your tail will be between your legs, that's for sure.

Davie, it is a hard lesson learned I'm afraid, but the reason for it and quite simple really.
By 'playing' the course before any comp, you would gain an advantage over others by learning the firmness/speed of the greens etc, and other things about how the course may be 'playing' that day.

As far as I know that is, there may be others who can explain it a lot better perhaps.

but why is it ok to do it if its a matchplay competition ??

surely that would give the same advantage?

Never beeen able to understand this one either. Some rules you look at and wonder what the R&A were on when they came up with it.

You're probably right but I can't see a difference. If you've played the course before the round you've got an advantage no matter if you're playing matchplay, strokeplay, scramble, foursomes, greensomes or any other 'somes you care to mention. This is one rule that just doesn't add up.
