Although I am nearing my mid 50’s I only joined my first golf club in March last year. Soon after I noticed a difficulty in seeing the ball and promptly arranged to see my optician. I have worn glasses for many years and have generally worn contact lenses for the last 28 years, so no problem there. I was prescribed a new pair of lenses but I have never felt they were as good as they should have been. The year moved on and I put up with the deterioration of my sight (trouble now seeing balls 70 yards) I explained the problem to my playing partners and they have all been so helpful in helping me look for my ball when I haven’t seen the direction I have hit it.

In January I was diagnosed with cataracts (in both eyes) unusual for someone in their 50’s but not as much as you may think. I spoke to my optician and he referred me to see a doctor and I got to see him in May. He agreed that my eyes were bad enough and we arrange for the first operation to be done on the 23rd June (the day England beat Slovenia) The operation only took about 20 minutes and within an hour I had a guard to wear overnight to protect my eye. A week later I saw the doctor who said everything was fine and we arranged to operate on the second eye on the 28th July.

On Sunday I got to play my first round of golf since the op. I can not explain the difference, to actually see shots fly off the club head and bound down the fairway, not only mine but my playing partners, to appreciate good shots and commiserate the bad one’s is something quite difficult to explain. I still have a problem obviously, because of my dodgy eye, but I can put up with being called Nelson or Long John Silver, and I can’t wait for the 28th July, or soon afterwards when hopefully I will be given the all clear, and can get back to enjoying my golf even more than I have been in the last 15 months.

FF, my Dad got his first one done in March and his other one on the 1st of July and he is amazed at the difference. It wont be long until you can see those 200+ yard drives land in the fairway.

Good luck.

FF,
I have been aware of a cataract in one of my eyes for some time.
It has never concerned me much but lately I have had trouble seeing where my ball finishes. Perhaps I will think about getting some advice on the matter.
Thanks for your post.
