On 14, cos i certainly think he did and replayed it on Sky+ a dozen times to satisfy myself, (and to gloat, even though he personally doesnt deserve it, but it was Darren !)

But the BBC commentators (who i think are normally good) could not even bring themselves to discuss it - a guy who has got close in a couple of previous majors and blown them, in the top 10, one of the longest drivers on tour so capable of mounting a charge in the last couple of holes, shanks one out of bounds .

Why the unwritten rule that you cant discuss shanks in earshot of anyone ? Surely it;s not another gofling anacronism like dress codes ?

It was in the air far too long and too far up the 14th to be a shank. A shank goes almost right angles and would've had stayed lower.
Not a shank for me, and I should know!
I'd say it was a straight block right, caused by clubhead not being released by hands, maybe he was trying to play a fade and it went wrong.

I think it was one of those sort of semi-shanks, where you catch just a tiny bit of the hosel, it sends the ball on its normal trajectory but right of target.

I do plenty of those when at the range (and once or twice on the course) and that's what I thought he'd done when I watched it.
In fact I recently did one that went about 150yds, so I can believe he could hit a shank a long way!

I think this is the correct answer

I saw Greg Norman shank once at Wentworth, he just said leave that ball I dont want to ever see it again!
