Have heard on good authority that Clarke will be awarded an OBE in the New Years Honours list when it's announced tomorrow. Good to see golf getting a bit of recognition
Any thoughts from the forum?

Hmm if drinking guinness was a pre requisite then where's mine? The honour's list is a farce, there are lots more people deserving of one.

Lovely news, lovely guy however is it a sentimental vote?

To be honest that was my exact first reaction. There was probably a bit of sympathy involved, but when you consider that he is 6th in all time euro tour earnings, and the people who are eligible above him have received honours, then take into account all that he has done for the sport most prominently this year and the Ryder Cup… I don't think it is.

Oh and he has done a far bit for charity too, which always counts!

And there will be a lot of people who you don't even know getting the same honour. It is one of the few things where 'normal' people are honoured alongside celebrities. I have no problem in DC being given the same honour as someone who has dedicated their life to a charity or something. I will congratulate them all if they are awarded an honour without judging if someone else deserves it more as I am not really in a position to judge - are you?

Its not about judging, its about opinion!

Simples.

Sentimental vote? Yes of course it is, that's the whole point. The way he has conducted himself in his Family life and then on to winning the most coveted of golfs Majors.

Whether anyone agrees or not, that's the way it is these days. In other words, they don't have to be an all conquering, swashbuckling hero to get one.

So IMHO it is richly deserved.

It is well deserved. He is 20 years playing professional golf, has always tried to do his best, he has never tried to be anything other than a talented family man. I think an honest ambassador for everyone to connect with. Recognition well deserved.

Not knowing what he does for chrity then I assume his commitment to things other than golf, plays a part. It is the actors who seem to get them for doing bugger all that gets me. Actors are the bottom of my list (aside from obvious nutjobs/criminals etc) when it comes to who you'd save when the big bomb comes.

On performances alone, I would say there are more deserving candidates however based on the information provided here about all the work he does then it sounds like its fully deserved and I am happy for him as he seems like a genuinely nice bloke :)

So doing a highly paid job for over twenty years and earning millions into the bargain is deserving of an award?

That wasn't what you were saying- you mentioned lots more highly deserving people.

Its always been successful entertainers/sports people who have achieved over their careers and traditionally awarded at the latter stages. Just wondering who else you had in mind?
