Cycle advice

I dont understand the trend for single front chain rings. To me, you reduce down your gearing options and with so many on the rear cassette the chains have to be so thin compared to say what I have with an 8 speed cassette......and I used to break chains (good ones) far to often.

I'm not really a downhill speed merchant at the minute, I crap myself when I get to any reasonable speed :D so I don't need extra gears on the front. I'll maybe get a larger front chain ring once my confidence rises but at the minute it's perfect for me.

I have a lot of bikes. They are like sets of irons, and I have 8 sets of them.

Road bike, check.
Hybrid, check.
Hard tail Mtb, check.
Full sus Mtb, check.
Single speed, check.

I am thinking of getting a bmx. I am 53. I have no idea why.

I don't cycle much either.

Downhill speed? Fastest I ever got to was 48mph, on the tarmac hill going down from Wissant, just outside Calais. That was on a Marin Rocksprings full susser, Panaracer Fire XC tyres, wearing crash hat, lycra top, shorts and clipped in booties:)
The look of the cars we were overtaking on this single carriage way road was awesome:)
I did that with the 44/32/20 and 11-28 on 26" wheels.
Almost spinnning out the big ring..

Off road is just as much fun of course, just less chance of death:)

Mental, I actually went over the handlebars the other week when I took a wrong turn and ended up going down a pretty technical track
Still got the scratches and bruises but I now know not to go down that route again :o
I'm a proper newb but it's literally on my door step and I'm there 3 times a week at the minute. My fitness levels have noticeably increased which is a massive bonus.
