I have tried searching this but just get results showing custom fitting related posts.

I would like to get a new fairway wood in the new year to replace my almost antique callaway steelhead jobbie, having read a lot of tom wishons stuff on the internet, i'm tempted to go down the custom club maker route, just wondered if anyone had done this and what their experiences were like? whether its worth it- performance and cost wise? and any recommendations on which companies to use, I have been looking at Designer Golf in the midlands.

Thanks

Matt

I use a custom club maker rather than buy off the shelf.

All I can suggest is find someone that deals with the brands you are interested in and make an appointment. It is well worth the time and effort to have something a bit different in your bag and knowing it is exactly right for your swing

If I go down that route again I'll go with a head I'm comfortable and get a shaft fitting.

I've got a wishon shaft in my driver and its absolutely fantastic.

Can I ask why? Not trying to be provocative but it seems an expensive solution to replacing a single (and not that frequently used) club especially when all the big manufacturers offer a C/F service

I was inconsistent with my driver.

A couple hours on the driving range trying different shafts and found the Wishon suited me.

3 weeks later my driving is seriously more consistent.

Even with the cost of buying my driver new, then paying for a shaft change, it was still LESS than £150 all in. Expensive? Me thinks not. Not when you look at the price of new drivers now, its half!

Don't rule out KZG they are massive in this.

Rather better if you don't rule ANYTHING out.

KZG do make good gear, as do Nakamichi, Wishon himself and quite a few others. It's just that they choose to market them as components and through fitters than via retail channel that the likes of TM, Titleist and Callaway use. As Retail channel marketing is more expensive, it's likely that all parties benefit.

And there are plenty of You-tube vids that show the difference there can be between 'Made For' that go to the Retail clubmakers and the 'proper' ones that go to fitters.

Having spoken to a couple of shaft reps I can tell you that not all companies use "made for" shafts. A little bit of research on the net will quickly show up which ones are which.

Thanks for all the replies.

Homer: yeah, at the mo i just carry a 4 wood so it does get used quite a bit, pretty reliable from a lot of lies. as for cost, i dont believe it will work out anymore expensive than getting something more mainstream custom fitted, have a read of 12 myths by tom wishon, its on the internet in pdf, i know this is his opinion but i agree with a lot of what he writes.

I was fitted for a set of KZG CBIII forged irons a few years ago, and they are fantastic. Custom fitting is the best way to ensure the clubs you use or are thinking of buying are set up for you. We're all different shapes and sizes and one size doesn't fit all as the major OEM's would have you believe. We all have a different swing, swing speed, grip ...... so having the right shaft that suits your swing speed and having it with the correct kick point and launch angle deffo makes a hell of a difference. I still use my KZG's from time to time and love them, but was lucky enough to get a fantastic deal on some Miura's, so snapped them up and went to be fitted. Never looked back.

You usually get the cost of the fitting knocked off whatever your buying by the way. good luck :one:

thats a nice set of clubs Doc, would love some muira's. whats your Alpha driver like? company i've been looking seems to have a lot of Alpha gear.

The Alpha V5 is the coolest looking driver I've ever seen (All black including the face) But it also out performs everything I've tried. My favourite big stick for a few years was the KZG GF4, which was awesome, but the Alpha does the business for me so if you get chance to have a go I can recommend it

That Alpha driver looks the dogs danglies

session is now booked for late Jan, will probably be either a wishon or alpha wood, open minded about it, so whatever performs best will end up in my bag. will post results once its all done.

thanks for the help.

I have been to Pings in gainsboro , callaways near chessington and my current clubs from the pro i take lessons from , Chris Brooks , you can google him , he does Titleist clubs and has all the gear from K Vest to trackman , best advise i can give you is to find someone local that does this and book an appointment , the other is wait till you playing well and swinging good before doing so , more chance you be fitted right .....all the best

Thanks

Matt

and merry xmas to you

I have had my KZG cavity backs for 10 years and they are still fantastic. Could do with a new sand wedge though as the grooves have nearly gone. I also used to have a Wishon driver but after 7 years of use it developed a small crack on the sole. Was gutted at the time. Was also fitted for my hybrid which is a few years old and made by Orka.
