One of Surrey's lesser-known courses but one of the truly great layouts in a county with a bunch of them. Located some eight miles south of Guildford in between Farnham and Haslemere and well off the beaten track so not that easy to find.
It is a tree and heather-lined course with good bunkering and some really great greens when you reach them. It plays 6,134 off the yellows, 6,442 off the whites and 6,782 off the purple championship tees all to a par of 71.
The initial four holes are a loop around the clubhouse with nothing too difficult unless you play the 3rd from the new championship tee which adds around 80 yards to the hole. But when you set out into the country, this is when Hankley really comes into its own. Sweeping par 5s, majestic par threes and enough dog-legs to make club selection off the tee to ensure you stay out of the ever-present heather.
There are enough elevation changes to keep the holes interesting too with the par-3 7th playing 183 yards across a valley, the 162-yard 16th uphill to a well protected green and then a magnificent finishing hole with a huge grassy valley short of the green thereby rewarding the really big drive on the 432-yard 18th.
Hankley Common is not cheap (£85,00) but only £25 if you play with a member and they do allow a fair number of societies on the course too.
For the likes of West Hill, Worplesdon and Woking with their tree-lined layouts, and New Zealand with its ever-present heather, Hankley Common combines both and is definitely one of the best layouts in the county and well worthy of the Open Local Qualifying returning there in June 2011.
