It's been an interesting week off. Cars and Golf - neither going particularly well. I drove a few cars (I'm after a run-around pocket money car for fun) and t.b.h. unless I go and buy a Boxster, S2000 or 350Z, I'm not really going to gain anything over my existing car. I tried a Celica 2 days ago (miles away), thought it was good and smart looking, but more fun and/or faster than Puma, No.

Anyway, that's not my main downer; I'm fed up with my golf.
I had a lesson this morning and my swing is just terrible. All the work, all the effort and sweat, all pointless. There's one thing that's better but mostly it's the same old rubbish I've played with since picking up the clubs again in 2007/8.

The way I see it, I have 3 choices.
1) Quit. (could do, but I'd miss it)
2) Keep trying, investing time and money OR
3) Forget the swing, play and let my h'cap drift up game after game after bloomin £3 game until I've wasted £100 on entry money and made it up to 15 or 16.

I've blown the chances of getting a car with my pocket money now anyway, 'cause I just bought my wife and daughter some apple products. :)

Anyone got any advice?

Maybe a week on golf boot camp where I get tortured with a blunt 3 iron if I can't sort out my woeful swing and equivalent-to-an-80-year-old distance?

:)

Stop over-thinking and just start enjoying the walk again. I tried to change my swing earlier this year and went through 5 months of garbage golf. I then decided to just stop thinking about my swing and just play the shots. I'm now back in the 70's and enjoying it again. I won't make that mistake again.

Thank god you didn't buy the Boxster! Things could have been a lot worse!

350Z's are ok. Good value considering how cheap they are now.

watch the news, massacres ,murders, poverty,Then watch maybe a childrens hospital programme.

Get a grip

I don't do that stuff. If I did, I'd be on a double downer! :)

I'm happy to get a grip, it's the type of grip (?)....stick with it, let it go or somewhere in between.

What area of your game is bad Dave??

Hmm, hard to say.

Last game 6 pars, 10 bogeys, 2 doubles. Couldn't get up and down, greenside cut was deeeep, in fact the mowers followed us round. :(

Driving was poor (unusual, but new driver)...

Both doubles came on longest holes, after missing green on 3rd shot.

Just very dull bogey golf. It's not really the playing, it's the swing and not seemingly being able to do anything I'm asked to work on between lessons. I'm fairly sure I could never have a lesson again and still play to 14-16.

Dave, I know you are a pretty methodical type of guy and I'm sure you can work it out. Several things spring too mind. Too much self imposed pressure. If you are struggling then a lesson or two seems to be the sensible option especially as you are like me and will work hard onthe drills and fix.

I like the idea of the playing lesson although conditions aren't exactly conducive (I had to postpone one last night as the course and greens flooded in a twenty minute deluge). Either way, I think once you get the mojo and find the centre of the club again then you'll be fine and there is more chance of me hitting single figures than you ever reaching 15. You are too good andconsisttent even if it doesn't feel it right now

Cheers Homer.

It's not really about the score, although I'm kind of bored with 14 over.

It's about the time and money....The green fees are paid for (obviously, as a yearly sub) but the trips to course and range for practise are not proving worthwhile - I could be doing other stuff.

I'll go back to square one tomorrow, report back to my pro in a few days.

That sounds pretty close to my plan.

I figure this year being a total washout hasn't really helped anyone. It's hardly smiles and t-shirts

Forget the practice for a while. Forget the range, the putting, the chipping.
Just rock up, warm up and play......

Hey if it doesn't work at least you're spending less money..

Id 2nd what Murg is saying here and also add take a break from the lessons and let your mind go free of swing thoughts.....
Have you got to 11 without lessons.....

If so you cant be all that bad.....Short game is something that you can work on for 15 mins at home a night if your not up to much and have a few blades of grass out the front or back......

I know from my own perspective this year im a lot more confident even though i get the odd gammy tee shot but i accept these will happen.....
What iv been working on the past few weeks has been 1 swing thought and lots of wedge play and putting and its showing....I think its only a matter of time before i click but it hasnt been without its downsides......

Golf is a game of confidence...If its high your flying but if its low then its not very nice.....
I think that if you can at least gain confidence in one area of your game then it will have a knock on effect....

Unless your lessons were targeting something really bad in your swing id let them go and play free of thoughts.

What have you got to loose.

Too right. Getting depressed about hitting the ball shorter than ever is not exactly sensible is it, when the ball lands and requires a trowel to get it out?
