What with the weather lately i have only had the option to practice on the range and seem to be getting a good consistency. I am happy with 7 out of 10 of my shots with most of my clubs; this i know will change as soon as i get on a course. Are there any tips for my practice sessions to help me with this?

My tip wuold be practice your weak clubs the clubs you feel you are not hitting consistently and build up your confidence, when you do a bad shot ask yourself why and adapt accordingly and eventually you will lose the poor shots. Most importantly is believe in what your trying to do and fully commit.

Carrying form from the range to the course is notoriously difficult.

If you find the key, post it on here, I'd love to know.

Some people stand on the range and practice hitting nice and smoothly not really aiming at anything and beautiful shots sling out of those beautiful Mizzies/Pings/TMs etc
Get on the course and its 150 uphill into a cold 3 club wind.
Of course I can reach with a 7................stupid useless clubs

Back to the range :( :( :(

There are many reasons for this though. Down the range I am hitting smooth 7is, but on the course, I know I once hit one 160, so from 160 out I am reaching for the 7i, but in the back of my mind, I know I have to thrash it to get it there. Hence, bad swing.

Also, on the range, I can keep looking where the ball was for that fraction, before looking up, because there is no pressure, and also because I am not going to lose it. On the course, that added bit of tension, or anxiety causes me to look up a bit early, and presto, rubbish shot.

These are all things I am working on at the moment, along with the change to S&T. In all, big changes, but hopefully this year will come together, and get me to a 12 handicap.

Most people play less well on the course than the range and there are obvious reasons. For example, a shot on the range costs the price of a range ball (and you probably have another 50 in your basket) but on the course, it's shot on your card. The terrain is different and the targets have hazards. These issues and more make us feel bad because we have an expectation of what we want to see on the golf course. What I would do:
1.Lower your expectations for each shot on the course - in fact, if you can play without expectations that would be best of all.
2. Allow some time to practice on the course if you can - e.g., get into a bunker, play out of the light rough
3. Try to see an image of what you want your ball to do before you hit each shot

All the best,

Dr. Paul McCarthy
