Went to see Sam Smith in Manchester last night. He was fantastic. What a voice. Best compliment I could pay was that he sounded just like his records.
However, the amount of people and most of them were women that had there phones out quite frankly got on my boobs.. There was a polite notice that was shown before asking folk to put there phones away, but a large amount of the crowd were either illiterate or ignorant or both.
Ironically Mr Smith then said half way through, get your phones out and turn on the lights.

Muppets. They either end up missing half the concert because they are viewing through the phone or bore people rigid the next day with dodgy picture and sound quality. Enjoy the moment, put the phone away.

I like Sam Smith, great voice, but his songs can get a bit grim after a while. Did he do any upbeat songs?

If they're filming it what's the problem? They miss the fun, you get to watch it again on YouTube!!

There was a better one, shame it's gone.

He did do a few upbeat songs, the crowd really got into the concert. The balance between his backing group and band was fantastic.
Some of the phones the women had have lights around the edge of the phone case, so when there taking selfies it lights up there faces. Only problem was that half the time it was like shining a torch back into the audience

Tashy my man, Sam Smith? You wouldn’t believe the grief I gave my mate for saying he listened to him, but you took it a step further and saw him live 😮
I need to take a few minutes to reflect on and digest this shocking news 😂

I could have had a front row ticket for this but having never heard him I listened to a few of his songs.
What can I say, I struggled to through 3 songs, a full show would have driven me mad.

In my defence, it was my birthday the day before and Missis T "treated" me to Sam Smith.
His songs are a bit dowdy, but when he is talking about where and when he has written his songs. His parents splitting up, coming out as gay and romantic breakups feature strongly in his life. Ironically a lot of the crowd ( with the great exception of me ) were singing his songs word for word. Seemed to me a lot of his fans could relate to what he was singing about.
Gotta say him singing a Bond song was fantastic.

Your joking, front row. I would watch Teletubbies on ice if I had chance of a front row.

Quite uncanny that reading this, I had this playing on another tab..

But no, I don't get it because 99 out 100 the footage is terrible.

My thoughts entirely, he is utter gash!

IMO this filming live shows/concerts is in the same basket of smashed eggs as selfies and much of what is posted on Facebook and other photo-based social media - narcissistic 'all about me-ism'. Look at me - look where I have been - look what I have seen - look who I have met - look what I have been doing. An awful lot of 'I' in a modern society where self and what is best for self seem to matter more than any wider consideration of others or of society as a whole.

What exactly is wrong with selfies? I have about 50 on my phone of me and my 9 month old..

A selfie is what a postcard was 30 years ago really. Wish you were here.

Tash if my wife treated me to something I had pretty much no interest in I’d be ungrateful and ask for the Money next time.

I’ve been to 100s of gigs and this is my biggest bug bear. I don’t understand why people can’t just enjoy the ‘moment’ and create memories using their brains.

What a sad and jaundiced view. What about sharing a happy moment with family and friends. I have relatives all over the world and often take pictures showing what I'm up to as do they. It's called keeping in touch. Not narcissistic in the slightest. You seem so reluctant to accept modern society in many forms

To be honest, I thought the concert was excellent, he is deffo a more girlie than boysie singer. But he has an excellent voice.

Absolutely agree Homer. As for filming gigs, each to their own. Can't see the point myself, even with a brand new phone the sound quality is dreadful. I might take a few pics but after that the phone goes away and I enjoy the gig with my own eyes and ears.

Much the same for me. Add to that the number of people that never stop talking during a gig - why go if you don't want to listen?

It’s also worth remembering that artists absolutely hate it. It’s supposed to be an experience and a connection between fans and artist yet the artist has to perform with 1000s of little lights shining in there eyes.

No no wonder many are banning it.

It won’t be long before and artist copyrights their performance. Just like when you go to the cinema....is it really that different?
