I see Comet have thrown in the towel (into the tumble dryer, only £99.99 was £6,999) and flogged themselves off for £2

I would have paid £2.50 at least, like with BMW and Rover, buy it for nowt and then rob the pensions and live the high life.

Seriously though, what is going on?

Maybe they should have tried selling stuff for a proper price (i.e. actually making a few quid) rather than expecting every numpty to buy extended after-care and £1 cables for £49.99.

Silly arses.

I go there quite regularly, except every time (without exception) they peas me off with sales patter and push add-on rubbish. I fear it could be the beginning of the end......

I think that the £2.50 wouldn't have clinched the deal. As far as I understand, the new owners had to put in £50 million to keep it going and guarantee to run it for at least 18 months. So if you have that sort of money Dave ...... please buy my business!!

The holding group of companies buying Comet is called "Hailey".

"Hailey's" Comet.

You couldn't make it up.

Which does beg the question why got there regularly if you are never happy with the service?

I do much the same - either the sales staff are all over you with a rash or you cant see one for love nor money. They are a good shop though, to have a feely touch before buying online or wherever. I asked a few days ago about an ex display model and whether they would knock a bit more off the price and the only question they asked was "are you going to buy a longer term warranty"? When the answer was "no" that was pretty much the end of conversation - they are free to deal or not, but their profits pretty well all come from warranties

Many years ago I was looking for a new fridge freezer, I saw the one I was after in Comet, cant remember the exact price but lets just call it £500. The guy gives me all the patter including the "Comet, never knowingly beaten on price" pish.

I then go next door and see the same fridge freezer in some other electrical superstore at £470 so I went back to Comet looking for a price reduction since they are "never knowingly beaten on price". I was told, well go and buy it next door then!

Never been back since! Refuse to set foot in their stores.

If you can be bothered and you really can't find the item elsewhere for a decent price, the trick is to take out the warranty and get the cheap price. You are given a cooling off period for the warranty, so you can just cancel it within this period.
You won't win any friends with the sales people, but if you are not a regular shopper in comet, you probably don't care.

Good point. It's because either a) I actually want to see a product or b) know it'll be no cheaper online and c) I actually quite like the experience, just not the sales staff.
If you've only got 2 hours to acquire a household good, it's not a bad bet.
As picky as I can be (I admit that) you get the feeling that the staff are just trying to do what they're asked.
There are also far less options here than in your area.

How many times do you go to AG and try out clubs Homer?????

Daily*/Week*/Fortnight*/Month* Delete as applicable! :D

Fair coment Smiffy but I get on well with the new guys they've recently got in there and a shred of belief is coming back. I make no bones about going in and trying the gear and they are pretty good at letting me. They know about the forum and know that I'll tell people what I think. They have been pretty interested in my views on AG and we've had some interesting discussions about it. Like I say times are a changing at my local AG at least

the gripe I had with Comet was their delivery. they advertise 7-days a week but when I ordered and said I wanted on a particular day they said they didn't deliver on that day. when I pointed out the rather prominent notice it was still 'we don't deliver that day'. (of course what they meant was they didn't deliver to my area on that day but they did deliver somewhere - not a whole lot of use).
went down the road, got it cheaper and delivered when I wanted it.
