So with recent weather being...... Chilly I find myself constantly looking for something warmer to keep out the wind chill but I'm struggling.

My course is on the top of surrey downs so is always windy and this time of year I just can't seem to keep warm,

Base layer, tee shirt and pro quip lambs wool wind sheeter jumper still don't cut it on the top half, i end up also wearing a ashworth water proof tank top over the top to keep the wind out, but it's too many layers.

Looking for some advice on warmer clothing top half without the need for four layers plus.

Many thanks

I wear 4 layers but they are all thin enough that it doesnt feel like too many at all, baselayer, polo shirt, lightweight mid layer and then a windproof jacket, at Tadmarton on friday I had to increase it to 2 baselayers!

Today I just had a Base layer, a polo and my Mizzy Windlite Fleece - overwarm towards the end....

Wouldn't mind some lined troos though....

on Sunday I had thermal longjohns and my proquip waterproof (lined) bottoms, thermal top, CK mock top, T shirt and a windproof ping jacket & an under armour beenie, callaway mitts between shots and was toasty as and not too many layers

so I would go for a decent long sleeved mock necked baselayer, maybe a long sleeved T shirt or a wool jumper and windproof jacket

the jacket is the main bit being windproof, stops it biting through.

Bottom wise I normally use HH thermals and Nike winter shower proof bottoms and I'm fine, its the top.

The base layer is UH so not a cheaper brand, and the pro quip wind sheeter jumper is a market leader, its just not enough :(

I hate too many layers as it just feels to restrictive.

my main baselayer are the white pringle ones from matalan, wear them for work and golf and as I work outdoors I just have the long johns and work kecks, thermal long sleeved T, long sleeved work t shirt and a fleece jacket, does me just fine even when we have the snow.

Top layer your better off with varying your layers and perhaps only wearing one which is golf related. For all the under armour, Nike and golf specific base layers the best in this weather come from other sports. The best I found and one I had on last night was a Helly Hansen Leafer tips, they get used a lot by skiers, climbers and other extreme sports.

They are a hell of a lot warmer than ones made for golf and generally stocked in places like blacks or other outdoor shops. But you can pick them up at moment for a steal at sports direct about £15 I think.

The important factor is whatever layers you wear need to be breathable because when you initially warm up non breathable items will make you sweat even in this cold snap, and then that starts to evaporate causing you to feel even colder.

For a top layer again look at outdoors shops instead of a golfing waterproof top I wear a Quicksilver snow boarding top due to its nature of needing to be lightweight and moveable it works wonders for golf wear as its even thinner than any golfing waterproof but triple lined so 3x warmer and it breathes to wick moisture away stopping me from sweating.

So last night 2degrees at range I had on my top, Helly Hansen Leafer base layer, dunlop short sleave base layer, quicksilver top. Was as warm as toast.

Bottom half on course avoid golf gear and bung on long johns, trackies and waterproofs over the top lovely and warm.

Go with those types of combos means less layers so less restrictive but a damn site warmer

Base Layer, Cashmere Polo, Waterproof top.

Wore GG Windstopper top today and my wrists froze! One of the earlier Windstopper tops would have been better (there are several types) as lined and warmer. That's what I'm blaming for several duffed chips anyway!

We're a bit further into town that Oddsocks, but its in a frost hollow, so always a few degrees colder than surrounding areas. I've gone for stuff that's not specifically golf - a long sleeve polo from Uniqlo, topped by a Quechua fleece from Decathlon. The fleeces are good as they are quite thin and not bulky. That's done me for most of the winter but on the nippier days put on my GG waterproof jacket. But for the most part, three layers was too much.

Maybe I dont feel the cold as much or it's just warmer this way, but base layer, polo over the top with pure wool sweater, woolly hat and fleece lined golf trousers, toastie.

Played last weekend, tee'd off at 7am, temp was -3.

Polo shirt, Mizuno Warmalite sweater (Very good BTW  )and my Timberland fleece.

Comfortable all the way around.

Agree with Ian about lined troos' though.

I do find it strange that all these post about it being cold and cold gear are from chaps south of Watford, who to be fair don't know what real cold is;)

I'm not trying to appear hard or tough, come on guys its winter... what we in the highland are supposed to have all year round.

Oh and i saw someone wearing shorts at Royal Dornoch the other day;)

LOL. I also laughed like at drain at the matchplay on telly last week, when the pros (bless their cotton socks) had to play in non-tee shirt weather.

How about a big pro tournament in Scotland, in mid-December, so all the 'traditionalists who love all the hisory / traditions / home of golf' etc. (Mickelson et al) can put their money where their mouth is!!

I think it was colder at The scottish open the last couple of years than i was last week in Arizona.

We don't need to have comps in Dec, its bad enough in the middle of summer. :( I shudder to think what they will be dressed like for the Ryder cup at Gleneagles next year...;)

Nah, stick it to 'em I say Patrick....let them really earn their millions!

You boys have to play in Arctic conditions, so let them if they have so much 'respect for the home of golf'!!

The BBC could put it on straight after Ski Sunday.

You can swing with 4 well chosen layers, when done right it work a dream. I do 4 layers along with a nice thinsulate hat and winter playing gloves. Yet to be too cold, even when wind chill was -6

I do three (thermal undies) layers on the bottom too with THICK socks.
