I'm after a bit of advice and recommendations for a coffee maker.

It's something the missus has wanted for a while but we've just never got round to it.
It doesn't need to produce amazing posh coffee, just nice coffee and latte's, cappuccino's, stuff like that.

The biggest consideration is maintenance. Whatever it is it would be great to start with, but I just know that if it takes much looking after (cleaning, servicing etc) that it will end up gathering dust and not being used.

Can anybody offer any suggestions?

Thanks.

I'm somewhat of a coffee enthusiast, love a good coffee. I've had nearly everything the market can throw at me from steam your own milk style machines, to filter machines and pod style machines. The best, by far, is the Tassimo. Great selection of coffee's available, most of which are usually on offer in one of the major supermarkets. Quick, easy to use, minimal cleaning required, and when it does need cleaning it's the same process as making a coffee, so very straight forward.

The new ones have a built in Brita water filter in the water tank so the water is filtered too which is a god send if you live in a hard water area like I do. You are also given £20 of credit to use on their website which you can use to buy a load of "T-Discs".

If that's too pricey, or maybe a bit more heavy duty than what you are looking for, then a simple Morphy Richards filter machine will probably do the job for you. I still have mine for when I want to make a large amount of coffee, i.e. for when family are around or for my flask on a sunday morning to take golfing.

You can pick them up for about £20-£30, buy ground coffee from Tesco's (Highly recommend their Tescos Finest range) at about £3-£7 a pack. Just make sure it's got a reusable mesh filter and not one that requires paper filters. Paper filters are a pain in the arse.

I also enjoy a nice coffee Gary. Buying a coffee machine is not too much different to buying a set of new waterproofs, think about what your budget is before you start looking. You can get a smart looking simple straight forward coffee machine for under £50. on the other hand you can spend several hundreds and get a miniature version of what they have in Costa, which will enable you to do all the different types of coffee. Like Swanny said it may be worth looking into a tassimo as they do make really nice coffee.

Nespresso machine here, decent range of flavours and strengths (inc 3 decaf varieties) only downside is that capsules are bought online.
Cleaning is easy, capsules are collected in the small bin underneath the main body of the machine and if you go for the milk frother, a quick rinse under the tap and dry with kitchen roll does it.
I got hooked once I visited the nespresso boutique in Singapore, they made me a few different flavours and had to be dragged out of the place.
This is the boyo I have..

great thread and perfect timing, I want a tassimo machine and know scooby about coffee machines- (except we had a delonghi as a wedding gift and after having to spend 20 mins cleaning it everyday for a cup of luke warm coffee it sits in bits in the garage)

I like the look of these funky styles but any tips of what to get or avoid?

In terms of the coffee itself?

They have just started doing the Costa T-Discs which I think are excellent, there is something about the milk they use in the T-Discs which tastes great. also a big fan of the Carte Noir T-Discs, not for everyone, depends how strong you like your coffee. Don't bother with the tea's, I don't like them but then I'm really fussy when it comes to a cup of tea.

Save your money for now and invest in one of these, a bargain.

Cannot beat cafetierres, buy a burr grinder and grind the beans yourself, don't buy already ground coffee, not the same quality IMO.

If you really want a machine (I bought one but hardly ever use it), the de longhi ones are good. A triple espresso on a morning does wake you up tho :D

Agreed, you do get a great coffee out of a cafetierre, just too much faffing about for me. Also, my wife used to moan like buggery when I had my own grinder....too noisy.

Buy her some earplugs :D

no in terms of which Tassimo machine?- useful tip on the coffee discs as well though, thanks

Another Bosch Tassimo owner Here. Can recommend it very highly compared to the Nespresso machine we have at work.

Check Tesco - I seen Tassimo is Tesco going for £60! (£50 off), I think they have a new model coming out so you can pick up the older version cheaper.

In Terms of maintenance - The Tassimo will indicate when it requires a cleaning :). It will show a red light, there is a special Disc you can insert which puts into cleaning mode. Stick it in hit the button and it cleans itself.

+1 for Nespresso. I've the same machine as Brendy but in red. Had it 11 months. I got £40 of free coffee when I registered online.
