Well due to the constant rain this week I decided to do the direct golf MOT test
So I rolled up at 11 this morning at the Edinburgh branch to be introduced to Tom who looked at my clubs and complained that my irons were too clean . I said I'd used them yesterday in the rain and had wiped them after each shot .
then it was the grips were fine (they should have been as only had 3 rounds since I put them on ;) .
My shoe check consisted off a quick look while I was standing so he couldn't have seen the cleats !
Then for a warm up while he set the machine up he told me he was a spurs fan because he seen my gunners headcover so after i finished laughing at him.
I hit about 8 shots with 7 iron all which were in a nicely grouped together on the left side between 140 and 149 yds . The furthest left being 7 yds from the centre of the fairway so I was we'll pleased but was told clubs were off so he would check with tape and plastic board. Another half dozen shots later it showed I hit off the centre and a few near the heel he said it showed club was needing moved about 2 degrees He had me hit my 5 iron next but all 6 shots were dead centre  I tried the 9 iron next which produced a couple off off centre strikes too.
I asked if he was gonna check the rest and adjust the ones that need it. But his response was no the clubs are ok it must be that I stand to close that's why the go left .
So I said I wasn't happy with my driver as I hit it too high especially on windy days after hitting a few fades he said my spin rate was fine but was hitting a 14.8-16 launch and should be only hitting 12-14 max so the 11 deg was to much he gave me a JL tour black driver to try (couldn't tell what deg as its not written on club) while he reset a R11s then it was a couple of Adams drivers but I kept fading them I tried to tell him I feared hitting the bags of clubs at back of room
As it was tight when swinging the driver .
His reply was well ill just get you the free cd meaning he was finished with me so I asked him about shafts and what would he recommend for me to look for .you could have knocked me down with a feather at his reply
" we'll I'd say your definitely a reg shaft "
While I changed my shoes he came back with the cd as I shook his hand picked up clubs he said you need to spend a few hours at the range as you swing with your arms not your legs ( why didn't he point that out while I was in the bay hitting shots !!!)

So I left feeling the whole 50 mins was a waste of his and my time and I can pinpoint the moment that his enthusiasm died was the 5 irons as that's about the time he knew I wasn't gonna change my clubs or grips

I learned more by texting Greg (in fife) when I got home

I had the same poor assistance at their Bury store, not at all interested in you unless you want to spend there and then. And considering they dont offer all brands and poor custom fit system I would seriously recommend anyone to avoid getting the MOT and just speak to your pro.

I did one in the Dundee store a few months back, the staff were first class and I never felt the hard sell. Yes I got my hybrid re-gripped but that was my own decision. Never thought it was waste of time.

The concept is good - but the execution is pathetic in the case of the OP. Its a shame because as another poster pointed out, some of the stores do it well.

The experience from the OP would actually wreck your game quicker than a case of the yips if you let them loose with your clubs bending them and their 'recommendation'. Pretty shocking really - all aimed at grabbing some money on new stuff.

Did you have to pay for the MOT?

no its a free MOT promotion theyve been running, there was a voucher in a recent mag.

I was going to head to the Reading store on Sunday but after my lesson tonight which has totally deconstructed my swing there isn't a lot of point. Plenty of work and drills to do instead. I've been in touch with the Reading store on twitter and the guys seem genuinely friendly so I hope they would be able to step up and deliver

Hi guys, This MOT offered by direct golf is free, You will/should get everything promised in this promo, If you do not then please make it quite clear to the manager or store assiatant your service has not been acceptable. Direct Golf want to provide the A1 service promised and give a very good after care service for shoppers, if this has not happened then please feed this back. The only way it/anything can get better is if people feedback on their experience instore.
The only time a £30.00 charge will apply is if your lie angle or loft is incorrect and they need changing or adjusting. This is a fee even your local pro will change. If your equipment needs changes,ie, spikes & grips ect then if they are bought with you or bought from the store they are fitted free of charge.

no its free but there was posters up saying the charge is £30 so i think they did charge previously

Sorry Grumps, the £30.00 poster is for anyone who walked in the store and wanted their clubs lie and loft checked and adjusted. They also service the clubs at the same time. The £30.00 also allows you to pop back into store at least twice and year to have them checked, cleaned ect free of charge.

The quality of this "service" will obviously vary according to the skill and interest level of the person doing it, but it is clearly an attempt to get you in store to sell you some equipment. The fact the OP was offered JL and Adams drivers to try speaks volumes about the intention. This was not a proper equipment check/fitting session.

Anybody who wants to spend £30 on a loft/lie check should do so at a pro shop not a retail store.
