Have you been looking in the golf co. at the Edinburgh wool mill?

I'm quite impressed with these sets for starters....BUT, I still reckon some careful picks from the local newspaper is the way to go.

If you look on the for sale/wanted on here, you could do pretty well.

If you go with one of these two sets, I prefer the Hippo.

If you are just starting the game, thinking about a set of clubs that will last you a few years is perhaps the wrong way to think.

After getting used to clubs, learning to play the game you will find natural changes will occur let alone changes made by any lessons you may have or advice you may take.

A lot of golfers take quite a while to find clubs that suit them as much as their way of playing and this process can be lengthy and involve many changes.

My advice would be to buy a second hand set to get you into the game, then perhaps a cheap set you will find on offer from many vendors, then when you get used to golf, play and improving your game perhaps then you should think of an investment to last a few years and help your game.

I must have gone through a few second hand sets and random clubs before buying a more up market used set followed by a taylored set that I kept for about 15 yrs (worn out when I changed them)I then used Titleist irons and a mix of other stuff, then after MS I just used half decent mass market stuff as I no longer have the skills or feelings I once had.

Now thats just my experience leaving out brief encounters with kit along the way, everyone is different but you will change, you will get advice, tips or lessons that will direct you to change (hopefully for the better) and the natural enthusiasm for the game will encourage change.

Dont make long term decisions till you have a long term game.

If you are set on going down the package route then these are pretty decent

http://www.golfizus.co.uk/ishop/1094/shopscr625.html

I started out with a set of these and they suited me fine. Gave them to a mate of mine and he still uses them. Bought it from this company as well and they were very helpful. If you email them or call them they will at least try and give you some advice on what may suit.

For less than £130.00 they are a good place to start

Welcome to the forum.

I play with Cobra Forged SS 2004. I brought them new and have absolutly no intention of changing them any time soon. They feel great and look good to. They are also quite forgiving.

try www.golfbidder.co.uk they are £126 I think they are a good place to start and also for when you improve.

It depends on a number of things. What is your budget. How old are you and how long have you actually been playing. If you are still relatively young, a set of graphites may be easier to control until your body starts to develop. If you are new to the game my advice would be to get a set of cavity backed clubs as they are the most forgiving even if they will never win any beauty awards. You can probably get a good bargain on golfbidder etc but as I don't use online sites for purchasing clubs more experienced forummers will help.

Once you have a set of sticks I'd suggest getting down to a PGA pro as soon as possible so you can learn the basics and get a good solid start to your golfing career.

Welcome to the forum as well!

welcome to the forum euan,

I have a set of regal clubs that I started with. they are easy to hit and not too bad looking. Ideal really if you're just starting out. I'm in Oxford and if you're close and can pick them up, you can have them for £50.

Ive got a set of hippo I tried out and bought for someone else who in the mean time went and bought another set so I used them when travelling for a while, they are a good set of clubs so I couldnt condem your choice of hippo, but the expectations of several years of use is a litle wishful.

Knew someone who had a Wilson package set and was not impressed. They should not be confused with the top quality Wilson Staff kit.

The bag in his package fell apart within weeks and the clubs were not that impressive or that forgiving.

Stick with Hippo if I were you, they seem to do package sets better than most.

I think if you are looking for clubs you should consider some kit that is only a few years old. For example you can pick up some good deals on Callaway X14 or X18 as these were surpassed by the X20's and the X22's have now been released which should send the price of the earlier makes down even further. The thing about buying something like this is that they are a reputable brand, good quality and you may still get some sort of price should you get back into the game and want to upgrade to better kit later in the year.

Euan,
It may have seemed as if I was trying to sell you something, I wasn't. The set of Regal clubs are decent quality, good looking and if you can get to me in Oxford, you can have them for free.
