Just wondering:

a) THIS YEAR- what was the highest handicap of the winner of any of your club comps this year? (no bandit stories)
b) Do you think it's fair to say that the handicap system is fair in terms of competitions, or is there an uneven handicap spread when it comes to winners?

Absolutely no idea, our comps are split into divisions so I only generally look at Div1. The h'cap discussion has been done to death on here and I think the general concensus is, it has it's faults but it is as good as it will get. Splitting comps into divisions works for me way and I think most clubs do this for all comps with the exception of board events.

Bear in mind my newbie status! Do most clubs split comps into divisions?

I think so, usually Cat1 & 2 are Div 1, Cat 3 is Div2 and Cat 4 is Div3. Depending on the number of entries you might find Div2 & Div3 merged into one division.

At our place prizes are for top 3 in each division and again I believe this is normal.

we have analysed the results to death over the last few years - one of the advantages of computerised records!

conclusions are as follows:
1. the winners are almost directly proportional to the entries ie for 25% cat 3 entries there were 25% cat 3 wins there is a very slight bias to the lower categories consistent with that inherent in the handicap system overall.
2. a quick review of the match play singles matches shows that they favour the lower handicap player slightly (even given full handicap allowance!)
3. lower category players win more from the 2's pot, unsurprisingly.

We don't use divisions at all.

At Royal Ascot the only events that aren't split into divisions are the honour board events which are winners take all. To be honest, these are usually won by a widespread split of handicaps. We rarely get any competition (honours board or monthly stableford/medal) that is taken apart. It does happen once in a while and every dog and all that and I don't rarely pay any attention. I play my round do my best and see what happens.

Sometimes it is frustrating. We had a bogey event at Easter and I finished +7 against the course which in 7 of the last 8 years would have won. We had a guy who shot +7 in the second round alone and mullered the field. Sometimes you have to hold your hands up and say you were beaten by the better player on the day

We run a divison 1 and 2 system unless its a board comp when everyone is together. Highest winning score to my knowledge this year was me with 45 points in a stableford off 26. Medal best was a nett 62 I believe. Best scoring board comp was the Captains Cup which was won with 43 points by an 8 handicap player. I lost on countback but if a player can shoot 71(1 over) then he deserves it.
