Two players in our comp yesterday had the closest card playoff I've ever seen.

Both shot 3 over gross off 6 with identical back 9's (9 straight pars). Were also the same on front 9 (obviously), front 6 and were finally seperated on front 3 by the computer.

We always use card play-off method even for major finals and I can't help thinking that the above isn't the fairest way when it's taken to such extremes. Do most clubs do the same or do you do play offs over a few holes or sudden death etc for some events?

Crikey, that is close! I'd be in favour of a playoff for the bigger competitions, but for ordinary weekend singles comps/medals, i think the countback is the best way.

Yep, that's a close call. Can't remember one of those at our club. From a personal point of view, I once lost Captain's Day on a card play-off, where it went down to the last 3 on the back 9, and the guy who beat me finished birdie, birdie, birdie. :( How near can you get to a board jobbie without getting your name in gold leaf?

These days, when handicaps are calculated to one decimal place, I can't see why the differences cannot be used to sort out tied scores. If one player is exactly 2.5, playing off 3.0 and the other is exactly 3.4, playing off 3.0, then clearly the 3.4 player has had the better score, if you just work out the exact nett score.
