Christmas Ads on TV

Being a bit baffled by some of the messages in the Christmas Ads

John Lewis - A solitary Man on the Moon discovers that there are other people out there - but as he can't get to them or they to him he is now solitary and lonely.

Sainsburys - house burns down one Christmas Day but it's OK cos Mog is alive and the neighbours have rallied round

Tesco - a teenager stalks an attractive woman around a supermarket giving her all sort of unwanted and inappropriate attention and won't take no for an answer (ah - didn't we all - hmm - not sure that I did)

Asda - According to the Asda website

'The advert celebrates the great things people do each year just because it’s Christmas...and Katie Warnes on Facebook says: “Love this advert. Shows exactly what Christmas is about'.

Well Asda, and sorry Katie for being a bit pedantic on this, but just one teensy-weensy but rather important thing is largely missing (other than a wee bit of a school nativity play when we SING)

Ach well. Such is life. :confused:
 
I'm more baffled that someone would be baffled about thinking too deeply about the adverts

They are all meant to make you feel warm and nice - that's what they do - gives a little Xmas feeling in the world.

Nope,they are meant to sell things.
And you'd happily pay £20 pm not to see them :thup:

Are you talking about the birth of Jezza? Haven't historians worked out he was born in September?
 
I can't help but think that in real life the John Lewis advert would end rather differently. Old man uses a telescope to spy on a young girl in her bedroom. Cut to the final scene where police officers from Operation Yewtree turn up to arrest him and take away his hard drive to be examined.
 
Christmas ads aren't supposed to make you feel all warm and gooey. They're supposed to force more money out of your pocket as your defences are temporarily disabled by the waft of cinnamon and nutmeg.
 
Are ads what's on the TV when I'm on here or making a cup of coffee? I waste enough time watching TV without sitting through ads.

Not that bothered although I understand Mog from the Sainsbury advert is available to sell and people at our locally store have been buying 20-30 at a time. None in stock and no idea when they'll get more. Cue lots of upset kids. What on earth possessed them to allow people to fill their trolly up with nothing but these toys and guess what..now on e-bay at a hefty mark up - :rant:

I like the Sainsbury's one. It's the only one I've seen and paid attention to.
 
Christmas day, I'll be miles from any where with a shop, on a beach. Perfect. No prezzies, no cards, no JC, no hassle, no visiting rellies I don't like. Just me, Mrs mogs and a beach.

Haven't watched an ad for years. As soon as they come on I will switch over to something else, or record the programmes we want to watch, and then fast forward through the ads. I really hate adverts with a passion.

Christmas is over by then anyway, all you will miss on TV are the holiday and Easter egg ads:)
 
I agree, some of the Christmas ads out there are pretty crazy. But they are evened about by the plenty of great, touching Christmas commercials of this season. I recently read this article of the best Christmas ads of 2016: https://valoso.com/blog/top-christmas-ads-2016/

There are some pretty good ones in the list. You can even check it out and vote for your favorite Christmas commercial in the poll at the bottom of the article.

Even though some companies' advertising campaigns are a flop during the holiday season, it definitely is a special time for commercials. Many great commercials go viral and serve as a wicked promotional tool for the brands that produced them.
