Chipping!

I'm scared of chipping. Seem to chunk a large number of them about 3 foot. Anyone got any tips?

There were some great tips in last months GM. The best ones I've read that have helped me is playing the ball from the middle of my stance. Stance slightly open but club facing target. Weight favouring left hand side. Shaft neutral. Trying to keep my eye focused on ball then divot/brush mark. Soft hands. Heel of the club slightly raised. wrists quiet play the shot with your shoulders.

I also use my putting grip.

Sure Bob willbe on soon with professional advice

You guys are getting good :D

And don't forget, shorter backswing than follow through and don't slow down into the shot.

Went up for a quick practice to try my 1 club does most chips approach and I'm already feeling more confident about it. There was an incident however, about 10 mins in i had fatted a couple in a row so hit my club into the ground out of frustration only for the club to bounce unusually off the firm ground and consequently ramming the shaft into my family jewels, 5 mins later I feel like a new man with a whole new outlook on life.

Also pleased to see no "Chipper" users have piped up;)

I remain unconvinced by this one club for all chips mentality. For me chipping and pitching should be treated exactly the same as approach shots. Have a consistent and solid technique and vary the club based on the situation. If i'm on the fringe and have a long running chip why would I use a 'favourite' club like a gap wedge when a 6/7 iron or even a putt has less risk and is likely to be more accurate?

That said you play off 6 and I play off 26 so who am I to question ;)

Hope the meat and two veg are recovering

It was touch and go for a while but thankfully I've made a full recovery.

As for the 1 club thing, I agree that the most complete method is to use a selection of clubs dependent on distance, but as stated in my original post for me I'm just trying to take the confusion of choice out of the equation ie you're 15 yrds short of the green is it a PW or a 9 or 8 ..... By using 1 club you get a better feel for said club and how hard you need to hit it for each shot length. I think my problem is my wedges do generate quite a bit of spin/check on the ball whereas my irons for a similar shot tend to fly off the clubface more, so for me its all about getting that same feel for every shot.

No doubt I'll give this experiment up in a week or 2 time if my wedding tackle is still taking a battering

with this warm weather it texas wedge time!

i use anything from 8i-60* from my short game. if i can putt it i will though! started using a 58 yesterday instead of a 60. some nice wee clips with it.

im not one for soft hands though. i find this is what causes me problems. i use my own brand of a hinge and hold method for bump and runs.

What I am doing which may be of interest is trying to figure out carry and roll ratios for each club. As I approach the shot I'm figuring out where I want the ball to land, how far it is for me to the landing spot and how far from the landing spot to the hole. Say your PW on any given chip carries the same distance as it rolls and the landing spot is half way between you and the hole you know that's the club to select. If there is more carry than roll required you go up in loft to GW, SW or LW and the same the other way.

I'm hoping to spend one morning down the club figuring this out now the greens have dried. That for me removes all confusion. Obviously you need to account for green slope, hazards etc but it's a godo starting point and gives me confidence to focus purely on my landing spot.

ive heard of that but there is just soo many factors that can distrupt this method. the greens never run the same speed on different days. in fact if it gets cool in the evening then they run slower that same day. wind, grain, slopes, you own techniquie, power and lie of the ball all contribute to making this method redundant for me. as you say though it gives you a starting point and you can try to factor in the rest to try and make the chip.

Yeah Gary far from an exact science but I've never been a 'feel' player and am more confident when I have a rough understanding of what will happen. I guess it's like any shot you always have to take the conditions into account but having that information it does make me more confident when I address the ball :)

Ill use the putter is possible and if not my 58 wedge, its the only thing I practise with so have some idea of how it will react, if I practised with other clubs Im sure I'd feel more confident about using them...
