I'm thinking of getting a driving range style mat to practice chipping at home, does anyone have anything similar and know where I can buy online?

My back garden has about 12ft of decking (where the mat would be) and then about 20ft of grass (plus a few more feet patio at the back), so I should be able to get some decent practice.

I'd like one where I can stand on so looking at around 3-4ft square, the only ones I've seen online are:

(a bit more than I was hoping to spend)

(the bottom looks a bit thin)

Has anyone bought similar or know where they can be picked up?

Thanks for any help.

I'm pretty sure I saw one on Amazon that also had a patch of artificial rough on it, and i think it was cheaper than the one you posted.

The only one I can see on Amazon with dual surface is quite small, was looking for something I could stand on.

Is that the one or is there a larger version I've not seen?

Have a word with a local company that lays artificial turf they are sure to have an off cut they will sell you cheap.

We have a tiny garden and when it had grass on it, we had a raised area around 6 foot by 12 foot and a lower grass area around 30 foot by 15 foot. I used to chip from one to the other and I used a piece of astroturf to practice high flop shots over the trees right next to my garden and into the field. I hit the greenhouse a couple of times but had spare glass to replace. Over the winter I am putting in an astroturf putting and chipping area for me and the kids to practice on.

Window = 1 point
Vase = 5 points
Ornamental plate = 7 points
TV = 30 points

Sadly the other rule is "you break it, you replace it"

I used to use a off cut piece of carpet you can stick it to a piece of thin ply and can draw line etc on it just like at the range. What I've done now is I email various company's asking for samples of artificial grass and recieved lots of samples. They are only about 6/10 inch long but all different thickness i then glue them to a board. It's like playing from a fairway on some and playing from rough from others. Works great and cost nothing.

Why not have a word with your course green keeper?

They may have some old mats kicking about that they would be glad to see the back of.

I'll try asking the driving range for any unwanted mats, hadn't thought of that but worth a try.

Artificial grass only seems to be sold in minimum of 2m lengths so would have to buy way too much for what I need.

I'm thinking I might try 4 carpet tiles on a bit of plywood for a cheap temporary measure, then get something more substantial depending how much I actually use it.

Cheers for all the ideas.

I throw some spare carpet down then chip off that and through the wee one's swing ( whilst she is safe indoors) into a net.
Aiming through the ropes and over the seat lets me fcus on keeping chips straight
Really goo practice for greenside chips and has given me a better result in up and downs this season

I had been using a car mat that was never used and will not now be needed.

I used the plastic airflow balls and practiced chipping to and on to garden objects, flowers, trampoline etc.

Bob had a very good u tube clip showing a set up with a cane to chip over to show the correct method, alarums watch that first.

I asked at the driving range if they had any old mats spare I could buy - as it happened they had an off-cut which is fine for chipping off in the garden. It's about 5' by 2'.

In the house last week my youngest and I were practicing chipping in to a washing up bowl on the sofa. It was getting a bit competitive when he bet that I could not lob it up on the back of the sofa from about 3 feet away. Always up for a challenge I took that bet.
The resulting shot easily cleared the sofa, hit the wall behind with more force that I had foreseen and ricocheted across the room, glancing momentarily off the floor only to get enough height to head toward the TV. Luckily it hit the glass Alphason TV stand, bounced between 2 glass shelves with a nerve wrenching high-speed vibration akin to an old dentist drill and then fell to the floor.

All this happened in a split second where I went from supremely confident to drenched in sweat and shaking. As the room fell silent we both stood there, mouth a gasp and eyes like rabbits in the headlights.

Went with a strip of astroturf in the end, works well just thrown on the decking and can roll it up easily to store.

Tried the local range and had an old one for £30, but would have been too big and bulky to move I think.

Just need my girlfriend to approve a bunker now!
